What comes to your mind when someone says:

You Plant & It Grows?

What happens when you throw a stone in the river?

Have you ever noticed the ripples that are formed?

Just like a stone thrown into a river creates ripples that spread outward, a waqf
creates lasting benefits that continue to spread and impact the community over
time

Concept of Waqf
Inspiration for Waqf:
“When a man dies, his deeds comes to an end except for
three: Sadaqah Jaariyah (ongoing charity); knowledge
which is beneficial; or a virtuous child who prays for his
(deceased) parent”. (Hadeeth)

“The rewards of the good deeds that will reach a believer after his
death are: Knowledge which he taught and spread; a righteous son
whom he leaves behind; a copy of the Qur'an that he leaves as a
legacy; a mosque that he built; a house that he built for wayfarers; a
canal that he dug; or charity that he gave during his lifetime when he
was in good health. These deeds will reach him after his death."

Conditions of TASK-2

Establising a Waqf
Recall the terminology used in the Waqf –
from your reading of page 78

The conditions are aimed at ensuring the sustainability of both the endowed object and
the utility that it yields so that the benefits serve the purpose for which a certain waqf
was established in the first place.

The conditions include:

1. The endower must be capable of handling financial matters. He must be an adult,
sound of mind, acting freely out of his own accord and not under compulsion and
must own the property he intends to donate as waqf.
2. The property established as waqf must be that which is valued, known and perpetual
in yielding benefit and extracting usufruct.
3. The beneficiary must be for a good and benevolent cause and not for any evil
purpose, and that It be cause that does not terminate or cease.
4. The declaration should be decisive and mandatory in its formation. It cannot be
concluded via a mere promise nor can it be done on some condition!

12
Types of Endowment
Endowments are classified on the basis of the party benefitting from the
Waqf. Based on this, there are three types of endowments:
1. Family (Ahli) Endowments: For the benefit of the relatives of the
Endower. It is also called as Private Waqf.
2. Charitable Endowments: For the benefit of the public such as the poor, or
public charity institutions.
3. Joint Endowments: A combination of Charitable and Family endowment.
Here, the Endower specifies a portion of the benefits for his family and
leaves the other portion to charitable deeds. For e.g. An endower making
his house a Trust to different beneficiaries such as his family and the poor
from the community.

The UAE & Waqf
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of UAE, was
the visionary leader who founded many Awqaf in diverse charitable
causes both in UAE & outside UAE.

Sheikh Zayed’s initiatives encompass all members of

society regardless of religion, material or financial
standing. His charitable work extended even to include
plants and birds.
Rulers, merchants, corporate businesses and even ordinary
citizens follow in his footsteps to make donations to a
collective waqf whose benefits reach far & wide.
