The Historical Roots of Racism: From
Slavery to Segregation

1.Slavery in America
In 16th century Millions of people in America were enslaved and
not treated properly for centuries

2.Apartheid in south Africa


During 1948 to 1994 black South Africans were restricted to
designated areas and denied voting rights, subjected to inferior
education and healthcare systems

3.Colonialism
European powers colonized large parts of Asia, Africa and the
Americans often exploiting indigenous populations
EXAMPLES OF RACISM
1. Police brutality
Case:- George Floyd death (2020) sparked global
protests against systematic racism

2. Workplace discrimination
Many people are discriminated in workplace or a
company because of the colour of their skin and thus
they are not equally treated equally.

3. Hate crimes
During covid 19 pandemic there was a large increase in
anti Asian hate crimes. Specifically hate crime against
Asian Americans increased due to the labels such as
“kung flu” or “Chinese virus” which were used publicly.

Due to racism an individual person face many problems like
psychological Stress, trauma, mental illness, depression, Anxiety
Fear, distress, etc.

Racism has a huge impact on society because
