Traditional and Alternative
Medicine Act (TAMA) of 1997
It aims to improve the quality and delivery of health care
services to the Filipino people through the development of
traditional and alternative health care and its integration into the
national health care delivery system.
Traditional medicine - the sum total of knowledge, skills, and practice on
health care, not necessarily explicable in the context of modern, scientific
philosophical framework, but recognized by the people to help maintain
and improve their health towards the wholeness of their being, the
community and society, and their interrelations based on culture, history,
heritage, and consciousness.
Plant material includes juices, gums, fatty oils, essential oils, and other substances
of this nature. Herbal medicines, however, may contain excipients in addition to the
active ingredient(s). Medicines containing plant material(s) combined with
chemically-defined active substances, including chemically-defined, isolated
constituents of plants, are not considered to be herbal medicines.
01 Lagundi (Vitex negundo L.)
This medicinal plant had recently been
commercialized and many pharmaceutical companies
are making cough syrups out of it.

02 Ulasimang-bato (Peperonia pellucida)
Pansit-pansitan can be found wild onlightly
shaded and damp areas such as nooks, walls,
yards and even roofs. Pansit-pansitan has heart
shaped leaves, succulent stems with tiny flowers
on a spike. This is a very popular traditional
medication for gout as this herbal plant contains
analgesic properties.

03 Guava (Psidium guajava L.)
Almost all of the parts of this plant have
medicinal qualities and value, and thus,
making it as one of the most popular
therapeutic plants in the Philippines

Garlic antibacterial compound known as allicin,
saved many lives of the world war2 soldiers as
this property prevented the wounds from being
infected and developing into gangrene at a

09 Tsaang Gubat (Carmona retusa (Vahl) Masam.)
In folkloric medicine, the leaves has been
used as a disinfectant wash during child
birth, as cure for diarrhea, as tea for general
good heath and because Tsaang Gubathas
high fluoride content, it is used as a mouth
gargle for preventing tooth decay.
