(2) he was still uncertain as to what career to pursue.
Rizal enters in the university
- He had written Father Pablo Ramon, Rector of the Ateneo,
who had been good to him during his student days in that
college, asking for advice on the choice of career. But the
latter was not able to advice him because he was in
Mindanao.
- In the university, he studied Cosmology, Metaphysics,
Theodicy, and History.
- The following term (1878-1879), Rizal received the advice of
the rector to take medicine.
- He took medicine to cure his mother’s growing blindness.
Finishes Surveying Course in Ateneo
- During his first school term in UST, he also studied in the
Ateneo.
- He took vocational course leading to the title of perito

- He excelled in all subjects in the surveying course in the
Ateneo, obtaining gold medals in agriculture and topography.
Finishes Surveying Course in Ateneo
- At the age of 17, he passed the final examinations in the
surveying course, but he could not be granted the title
surveyor because he was below age.
- The title was issued him on November 25, 1881. He was 21
years old.
Unhappy days at the UST
- He found the atmosphere at the University of Santo Tomas
suffocating to his sensitive spirit.
- He was unhappy at his Dominican professors.
- These professors were hostile to him, the Filipino students
were racially discriminated against by the Spaniards, and the
method of instruction was obsolete and repressive.
Unhappy days at the UST
- In his novel El Filibusterismo, he described and how the
Filipino students were humiliated and insulted by their
Dominican professors.
- He related in Chapter XII, “The class in Physics,” that his
science was taught without laboratory experiments.
- The microscope and other laboratory apparatuses were kept
inside the showcase to be seen by visitors, but the students
could not even touch them.

decided to study in Spain.
- He did not seek his parent’s permission and blessings to go
abroad because he knew that they, especially his mother
would disapprove it.
- He had enough common sense that his parents, Leonor and
the authorities knew nothing of his decision to go abroad in
order to finish his medical studies in Spain, where the
professors were moral liberal than those of the University of
Santo Tomas.
Decision to study Abroad
- Believing that education in the country was limited, he
boarded a ship to Spain.
- He spent 10 years in Europe and opened his eyes to the
world, develop his natural talents and strengthen his
devotion to his motherland.

- In Spain, he continued the studies that were stalled in the
Philippines and enrolled at the Universidad Central de
Madrid where he graduated in 1884 with a degree in
Medicine, and a year later with a degree in Philosophy and
letters from the same institution.
- Even after the completion of these two degrees, he still was
not satisfied and traveled to France and studied at the
University of Paris.

- In his pursuit to further increase his knowledge in his chosen
field of specialization-ophthalmology- he studied at the
University of Heidelberg under the distinguished eye
specialist, Professor Otto Becker.
