 Electronic media includes radio, television and film. These


forms of media have revolutionised the world of mass
communication.
 Radio connects individual across geographical, cultural and
even political divides. The British Broadcasting
Corporation (BBC) was the first to use radio as a forum
for addressing public issues.
 The first radio stations were set up in the 1920’s in
Pittsburg (New York) and Chicago. The colonial powers
like Britain and France set up radio stations in Asian and
African countries in the early 20th century.

inform, educate and entertain its
audiences since its inception, living
up to its motto – ‘Bahujan Hitaya :
Bahujan Sukhaya’.
 One of the largest broadcasting
organisations in the world in terms of
the number of languages of
broadcast and the spectrum of socio-
economic and cultural diversity.
 AIR’s home service comprises of
470 Broadcasting centres located
across the country, covering nearly
92% of the country’s area and 99.19
% of the total population.

THE PRASAR BHARTI BILL(1989) :-
 Initially the Prasar Bharti Bill was introduced during janta dal
regime in 1979.bill is based on Verghese Report which wanted
full autonomy for broadcasting as part of the Indian
Constitution .
 Prasar Bharti is now India’s largest public broadcaster. It is
an autonomous body set up act of parliament and comprises
Doordarshan and Television Network also AIR .
 The President of India passed an Act to grant this autonomy in
1990 but was finally implemented in 23November 1997.

RADIO BRAODCASTING IN INDIA :-
20th August, 1921 -first broadcast was transmitted from the roof of its building.

23rd February 1922 -The first license granted for transmitting a broadcast was given

November 1923-The radio club of Calcutta was perhaps the first amateur radio club to start
functioning
31st July, 1924 -madras presidency radio club which began broadcasting on.

1926 – Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) private company given


permission to set up 2stations
July 23, 1927 -Bombay station set
August 26, 1927 – Calcutta station followed
1930 – Indian Govt. took over company ,formed (ISBS). After 2 years, BBC
started broadcasting in India
1936 – Delhi radio station was opened and ISBS was renamed All India Radio
(AIR). Ministry transferred to Dept.of Communication
1941 – AIR was transferred to Dept.of Information and Broadcasting
1956 – AIR was officially called as AKASHVANI which was also title of poem by
Rabindranath Tagore 1936
1957 – Vividh Bharti was started to compete with Radio Ceylon
1959 – Satellite Television was introduced, later separated to form to form
1976 –Doordarshan
AIR and Doordarshan were separated
1990 – Broadcasting Corporation of India was established with two distinct
bodies –Akashvani and Doordarshan
1995 – AIR decided to open FM stations to private players.
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE:-
ALL INDIA RADIO
The Directorate General, All India Radio functions under Prasar
Bharati. Director General is the Head of the Department
and is responsible for the overall administration and
supervision of the entire AIR network. In performance of his
duties and functions, the Director General, AIR is assisted by
officers of the following wings.

ACTIVITIES OF SUBORDINATE OFFICES OF AIR IN BRIEF
There are a number of subordinate offices of All India Radio
performing the distinct functions. The broad activities of these
offices / divisions are summarized as under:

RESEARCH DEPARTMENT
The functions of the Research Department include Research
and Development of equipment required by AIR and
Doordarshan, investigation and studies relating to AIR and
Doordarshan, development of prototype models of R&D
equipment for limited use field trials in AIR and Doordarshan
network.
CENTRAL STORE OFFICE
AIR’s Central Store Office, located at New Delhi, performs the
functions relating to procurement, stocking and distribution of
the engineering stores required for the maintenance of
technical equipment at All India Radio Stations.
COMMERCIAL BROADCASTING SERVICE CENTRES &
VIVIDH BHARATI SERVICE (VBS)
There are 41 Vividh Bharati-cum-Commercial
Broadcasting Service (CBS) Centres including the exclusive
VB Centres. The work relating to CBS is performed by two
Wings i.e. Sales Wing and Production Wing. An independent
Central Sales Unit along with 15 main Commercial
Broadcasting Service Centres looks after the marketing of
broadcast time in AIR.
Three-tier Broadcasting System

 AIR has a three-tier system of broadcasting. These three


levels of programmes are the National, Regional and Local each
having distinct audiences.
 National programmes are broadcast from Delhi for relay by
the Capital, Regional and Local Radio Stations. Some of these are
the National Programme of Talks and Features in Hindi and
English, the National Programmes of Drama and Music.
 The National Channel of All India Radio located in Delhi
broadcasted programmes which were heard on Medium Wave
and also on Short Wave. Started on 18th May 1988, this
channel worked as a night service from 6.50 PM to 6.10
AM the next morning. closed on January, 2019
 The Regional Stations in different States form the middle tier of
broadcasting.
 116 Regional Channels are spread over 29 states & 6 Union
Territories including the North-Eastern Service at Shillong that
projects the vibrant cultural heritage of the North-Eastern region
of this country.
 Local Radio is relatively a newer concept of broadcasting in
India. Local radio stations serve small communities, showcase
local culture and broadcast area specific programmes for the
benefit of the community. The transmission is in the FM mode.
The programming is flexible and spontaneous and the stations
function as the mouth piece of the local community. At
present there are 86 Local Stations spread across the
country.
