What is Privacy
 In general perspective privacy means:

“A state in which one is not observed or disturbed by


other people.”

 Many commentators have lamented that the meaning of


“privacy” is vague and elusive. Privacy is not just about
what people expect but about what they desire. Privacy
is not merely an individual right – it is an important
component of any flourishing community.
Privacy in IT Perspective
 Information privacy, or data privacy (or data protection),
is the relationship between collection and dissemination
of data, technology, the public expectation of privacy, the
legal and political issues surrounding them.

 Information privacy is considered an important aspect of


information sharing. With the advancement of the digital
age, personal information vulnerabilities have increased.
Privacy in IT Perspective
Information privacy may be applied in numerous ways, like:

 Encryption

 Authentication and data masking

 Privacy concerns exist wherever personally identifiable


information or other sensitive information is collected,
stored, used, and finally destroyed or deleted – in digital
form or otherwise. Improper or non-existent disclosure
control can be the root cause for privacy issues.

 What would be reaction of an individual if his / her data

 All personal data shared over the Internet is subject to
privacy issues. Most websites publish a privacy policy
that details the website's intended use of collected
online and / or offline collected data.

Financial information is particularly sensitive, as it may
easily misused or abused to commit online and/or
offline fraud.

All medical records are subject to stringent laws that
address user access privileges. By law, security and
authentication systems are often required for
individuals that process and store medical records.

protecting individual's privacy preferences and their
personally identifiable information. The fields of data
security and information security design and utilize
software, hardware and human resources to address this
issue.

There are many famous websites over Internet which
collects information regarding User Profiles, Activity Logs
etc. and maintain databases of these:
 Cookies

 Adware Cookies: (Record Activities across different

sites)
 Spyware: (Secretly record and report internet

activities)
 Keystroke Loggers: (Watch & Record keystrokes)

 Web Bugs: (Provide information to email spammers)

 As the laws and regulations related to Privacy
and Data Protection are constantly changing, it
is important to keep abreast of any changes in
the law and continually reassess compliance
with data privacy and security regulations

Privacy Laws
 Australia:-
The current state of privacy law in Australia includes Federal and state
information privacy legislation, some sector-specific privacy legislation at
state level, regulation of the media and some criminal sanctions.

 Brazil:-
A Brazilian citizen's privacy is protected by the country's constitution

 Canada:-
In Canada, the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic
Documents Act (PIPEDA) governs the collection, use and disclosure of
personal information in connection with commercial activities and personal
information about employees of federal works, undertakings and
businesses.
Privacy Laws
 France:-
Adopted a data privacy law in 1978. It applies to public and private
organizations and forbids gathering sensitive data about physical persons
(sexuality, ethnic, political or religious opinions...).

 India:-
In June, 2011, India passed a new privacy package that included various
new rules that apply to companies and consumers. A key aspect of the new
rules requires that any organization that processes personal information
must obtain written consent from the data subjects before undertaking
certain activities.

 Japan:-
Act on the Protection of Personal Information was fully enacted in 2005 for
the purpose to protect the rights and interests of individuals while taking
consideration of the usefulness of personal information.
Privacy Laws
 China:-
Computer Processed Personal Information Protection Act was
enacted in 1995 in order to protect personal information processed
by computers.

 United Kingdom:-
As a member of the European Convention on Human Rights, the
United Kingdom adheres to Article 8 ECHR, which guarantees a
"right to respect for privacy and family life" from state parties,
subject to restrictions as prescribed by law and necessary in a
democratic society towards a legitimate aim

 United States of America:-


The right to privacy is not explicitly stated anywhere in the Bill of
Rights.
