Writing to Describe and Narrate


At the end of this lesson, you should
be able to:
1. Analyze multimodal and print texts on travel in the terms of
content, narrative and descriptive techniques;
2. Consider ways to engage readers in narrative and descriptive text;
and
3. Plan, digital tour and creative writing out integrating narrative and
descriptive
What is Descriptive Writing
• Focuses on detailed, vivid descriptions. and engages the five senses
( sight, sound, taste, touch, smell )

What is Narrative Writing


• Tells story
• Has a clear sequence of events ( beginning, middle, end )
The Purpose of Descriptive Writing
• To create a vivid picture in reader’s mind.

• To make the reader feel like the they are experiencing the scene
themselves.
Key Elements of Descriptive Writing
• Sensory Details: Use all five senses
• Figurative Language: Metaphors, smiles, personification.
• Precise Language: Use specific adjectives, verbs and nouns
Example of Descriptive Writing
• Sample Paragraph: “ The golden sun dipped beneath the horizon,
casting a fiery orange glow across the ripping sea. A warm breeze
carried the salty scent of the ocean, as seagulls squawked overhead,
their wings slicing through the crisp evening “
The Purpose of Narrative Writing

• To entertain, inform, or express experiences.


• Often uses personal or fictional stories.
Key Elements of Narrative Writing
• Plot: Sequence of events conflict, climax, resolution).
• Character Development: Main and supporting
characters.
• Setting: Time and place.
• Point of view: First-person third- person, etc.
• Dialogue: Conversations between characters.
Example of Narrative Writing
• Sample Paragraph: ‘’ It was a chilly evening in November when Alice
first stepped into the old mansion. The creaking floors and dim
lightning made he heart race, but she couldn’t shake the curiously
that pulled her deeper into the dusty rooms. Suddenly, a loud thud
echoed down the hallway.’’
Combining Description and
Narrative
• Good stories often use descriptive writing to create vivid settings or to
give life to characters.

• Balance between showing (descriptive) and telling (narrative)
