Who was Louis
XIV?

• Louis XIV was the king of France during the age of age of absolutism.
• Louis took over extreme and absolute power.

• He used to call him the sun king due to the following reasons:
1- He believed he was like the sun to France.
2- He believed he was chosen by god to rule the country and take over the throne. (The divine rights of kings)
3- He made the sun his royal symbol.
4- He thought he was a god.

• Louis XIV was born on September 5th 1638.


• He was the son of Louis XIII.
• He ruled the France for about 72 years.
• He died in September 1, 1715 at the age of 76.
• Key achievements about Louis XIV:
a-He strengthened the power of the royal monarchy.
b-He built a huge army.
c-He built the palace of Versailles which contained:

1- 15000 acres of gardens


2- 1400 fountains
3- 36000 laborers
4- 6000 horses
5- 2000 rooms

d-He hired Colbert, The minister of finances to improve the economy

Impact of louis XIV on France:

• He left France surrounded by enemies and many of the French people in poverty.
• His great grand son was his successor.
• He exhausted France financially.
• He turned it into the most powerful country in the world.
• He built a huge army which was very strong.
• He increased France’s territory.
The death of louis XIV.

• He died in the palace of Versailles.


• He died on the 1st of September 1715.
• His heart was devoured after his death.
• He had the longest reign in the history of France.
• Some people say he died because of a disease called Gangrene.
• He died just after 8:15 on the 1st of September.
