    The Space

    Race: Animal
    Astronauts
    Does anyone have any
    idea what the “Space
    Race” is?
    The Space Race:
    • For most of the 20th Century, the
    USA & Russia were enemies.
    • Each wanted to be better than the
    other.
    • This led to the race to be the first
    country to put a man on the moon.
    • Both used a lot of experimental,
    dangerous technology in this quest.
    • Was important to get there without
    casualties.
    • 1950’s - Space travel was still
    dangerous for astronauts.
    • For this reason, animals were sent
    USA - Albert I & II:
    • In 1947 the USA sent fruit flies
    into space.
    • They didn’t survive however.
    • 1949 - The USA sent animals into
    orbit.
    • The first was a monkey named
    Albert Another monkey went on
    the next mission.
    • However Albert II died on impact
    after a parachute failure.
    USA - Able & Baker:
    • May 1959 - the first animals
    survive a space mission.
    • They were 2 monkeys named Able
    & Baker.
    • Aboard a spacecraft called
    “Jupiter IRBM”.

    • Both monkeys returned to Earth in


    good health.
    • However Able died only 4 days
    later after an operation.
    USSR - Belka & Strelka:
    • Rabbit Also included 42 mice, 2
    rats, flies, plants & 2 dogs.
    • The dogs were called Belka &
    Strelka.
    • They spent a whole day in space.
    • All animals survived the space
    mission.
    • An animated movie was made
    about Belka & Strelka.
    • It was made in 2010 and was
    called “Belka & Strelka - Star
    Dogs”.
    USA - Ham & Enos:
    • January 31st 1961 - Ham the Chimp
    was launched into space.
    • He was inside a Mercury capsule in a
    Redstone rocket.
    • He had been trained to pull levers &
    got bananas as a reward.
    • He showed that you could do tasks
    during flight.
    • He returned to Earth safe & became
    a celebrity.
    • November 29th 1961 - Enos the
    Chimp became the first animal in
    orbit.
    • His spaceship was the Mercury-Atlas
    USSR - Tortoises:
    • 1968 - USSR sent the first
    tortoises to space.
    • The spacecraft they were on
    flew around the Earth & the
    moon.
    • They were joined by
    mealworms & wine flies.
    • First animals to ever enter
    deep space.
    • Also first inhabitants of Earth
    to travel around the moon.
    • Landed in the Indian ocean &
    survived.
