What is AD DS?

Active Directory Domain Services (AD

DS) is a Microsoft service used to
manage and organize network
resources like user accounts,
computers, and printers in a centralized
directory. It handles user authentication,
access control, and maintains a
structured order of network objects. AD
DS ensures that users and computers
What are AD DS
Domain?
AD DS requires one or more domain controllers
• All domain controllers hold a copy of the domain
database which is continually synchronized
• The domain is the context within which user, group,
and computer accounts are created
• The domain is a replication boundary
• An administrative center for configuring and managing
objects
• Any domain controller can authenticate any logon in
the domain
Function and Benefits of AD DS

Centralized Directory Management

Function: Stores and organizes information about network resources
like users, computers, and printers.
Benefit: Simplifies management by allowing administrators to access
and control everything from one place.
Authentication
Function: Verifies who users and computers are when they log in.
Benefit: Ensures that only authorized people and devices can access
the network.
Authorization
Function: Controls what resources users and computers can access and
what they can do with them.
Benefit: Protects sensitive information by enforcing access rules and
permissions.
Function and Benefits of AD DS

Group Policy Management

Function: Applies settings and rules across all users and computers
in the domain.
Benefit: Makes it easy to enforce security policies and standardize
settings across the organization.
Replication
Function: Updates and synchronizes directory information across
multiple servers.
Benefit: Ensures consistent and up-to-date information throughout
the network.
Domain and Forest Structure
Function: Organizes network resources into a hierarchical structure.
Benefit: Allows for scalable and manageable growth of the network.
Function and Benefits of AD DS

DNS Integration
Function: Helps find and connect to network resources
using domain names.
Benefit: Simplifies resource location and access by
integrating with the Domain Name System (DNS).
Security and Compliance
Function: Provides tools to enforce security policies and
ensure regulatory compliance.
Benefit: Enhances security and helps meet
organizational and legal requirements.
What are Organizational
Units (OUs)?
An organizational unit (OU) is a container object within a domain
that you can use to consolidate users, groups, computer and
other objects.

Two Reasons to
create a Ous;
1. To configure objects contained within the OU.
You can assign GPOs to the OU and the settings
apply to all objects within the OU.
2. To delegate administrative control of objects
within the OU. You can as – sign management
permissions on an OU, thereby delegating
control of that OU to user or group within AD DS
Every AD DS domain contains standard
set of containers and OU that are created
when you install AD DS, including the
following:
Domain container – Serves as the root container to
the hierarchy.
Built-in container – Stores a number of default
groups.
User containers – The default location for new user
accounts and groups that you create in the domain. The
users container also holds the administrator and guest
accounts for the domain and some default groups.
Computers container- The default location for new
computer accounts that you create in the domain.
Domain Controllers OU – The default location for the
computer accounts for domain controller computer
