Overview of Peptic
Ulcer Disease (PUD)
Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) refers to
open sores that develop on the
lining of the stomach, small
intestine, or esophagus. When the
protective mucus lining weakens,
stomach acid irritates the
underlying tissue, resulting in these
ulcers.
Types of Peptic
Ulcers
1. Gastric Ulcers: Found in
the stomach lining.
2. Duodenal Ulcers: Located in
the upper part of the small
intestine (duodenum).
3. Esophageal Ulcers:
Occur in the esophagus.
Common Causes:

• Infection with Helicobacter


pylori (H. pylori)
• Long-term use of
nonsteroidal anti-
inflammatory drugs
(NSAIDs)
• Medications
DESCRIPTION OF DIET

The diet aims to


reduce acid
production, decrease
irritation, and prevent
heartburn.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DIET
● The diet should be primarily one that is liberal and
individualized since patients differ as to specific food
intolerances.
● A regular diet with only slight modification is
recommended in most cases.
● Bland and ulcer diets probably are not detrimental to
most persons if used for a short time and may be a
psychological benefit to some. However, prolonged
adherence to these regimens is not necessary and not
recommended.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DIET
● Food and seasoning that stimulate gastric acid
secretion such as caffeine, black pepper, garlic, cloves
and chill powder should be limited.
● Restriction of spices and other foods should be
determined by individual tolerances.
● Frequent milk feedings are not encouraged as
neutralization by milk is a transient effect that is
followed by hypersecretion of gastric acid.
● Very large meals may be an additional stimulus to
gastric acid secretion. Small volume, frequent feeding
may benefit some patients.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DIET
● Avoid bedtime snacks
● Avoid cigarette smoking. Cigarette smoking decreases
secretion of pancreatic bicarbonate, the normal buffer
of gastric acid in the duodenum.
● Avoid alcohol, salicylates (aspirin) and other non-
steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. (NASAIDS) agents.
Alcohol and some medications decrease mucosal
barriers to back diffusion of gastric acid secretion.
When taken with meals, the adverse effect of these
substances is much less.
