Concept

• Turn a statement into a question.


• They are used for checking information that we think we know is true.

Examples:

• You are a student, aren’t you?


• Mary looks like Celine Dion, doesn’t she?
Form

• Use an auxiliary and a subject pronoun (aren’t you?/doesn’t she?).


• If the main clause is positive, the tag question is negative.
• If the main clause is negative, the tag question is positive.

Examples:

• It is hot today, isn’t it?


• It isn’t hot today, is it?
Auxiliaries

• If the main clause has an auxiliary verb, you use the same verb in the
tag question.

Examples:

• You have played soccer before, haven’t


you?
• They like pizzas, don’t they?
Exception

• I am a teacher, aren’t I?
• I am not a teacher, am I?
