CONCEPT
CLIMATE RESPONSIVE DESIGN.
CLIMATE: SEMI-ARID
AIR TEMPERATURE: >35°C
AS CONVENTIONAL CROSS-VENTILLATION WAS
NOT ENOUGH,
FOLLOWING METHODS WERE USED TO
OVERCOME SUCH PROBLEM:

1. DOUBLE-ROOF
STRUCTURE:
A CURVE METAL ROOF WAS INSTALLED OVER
PRIMARY ROOF OF BRICKS WITH PORFORATION.
WORKING MECHANISM:
• STACK EFFECT: STACK EFFECT WAS ENHANCED
BY USING PREVAILING WIND THROUGH ROOF
GAP.
• VENTURI EFFECT: THE CURVED ROOF WAS
MADE IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT INCREASES THE
VELOCITY OF PREVAILING WIND WHILE Animated by: UGREEN_U
CONCEPT
CLIMATE RESPONSIVE DESIGN.
• THERMAL MASSING: THERMAL MASS OF CLAY/
CEMENT HYBRID WAS USED TO INSULATE THE
CLASSROOM FROM EXTREME HEAT
• SHADING: LONG OVERHANGING ROOF PROVIDES
AMPLE SHADES FOR CHILDREN TO PLAY OUTSIDE.
CONCEPT
LIGHTING WITHOUT ELECTRICITY.
• Louvered window was used to prevent glaring and to
provide enough sunlight. Even the perforations on
roof provide indirect light to the classroom.
• Use of clay pots to create skylight over library,

WORDS FROM DESIGNER, Ar. Diébédo Francis Kéré

“I built a building that is not westernized,

and not traditional African building. To
create a building that respond the best to
the climate and to the need of the people
using the most available material at this
time was clay which we combined with
cement . Creating with those together, a
well ventilated structure which is working
without any artificial or mechanic’s
climate control in the village no one could
build. Building with the labor of the
community, I could build something big
with less
financial means.”
-Diébédo Francis Kéré
