CHAPTER 2

Linear EQUATIONS INVOLVING TWO

VARIABLES
Q 28 A police department believes number of serious crimes which occur
each month can be estimated by the equation
C = 1,200 – 12.5p
Where c equals the number of serious crimes expected per month and p
equals the number of officers assigned to prevented patrol. If c is graphed
on the vertical axis:
a. Identified the slop and interpret its meaning.
b. Identify the c intercept and interpret its meaning
c. Identify the p intercept and interpret meaning
Q 29 The book value of a machine is expressed by the equation
V = 60,000 – 7,500 t
Where V equals the book value in dollars and t equals the age of the machine expressed in years
a. Identify the t and V intercept
b. Interpret the meaning of the intercept
c. Interpret the meaning of the slope
d. sketch the function
Q 31
Product Mix a company produces two products. Weekly Labor
availability equal 150 labor-hours. Each unit of product 1 requires 3
labor hours and each unit of product 2 requires 4.5 labor hours. If
management wishes to use all labor hours the equation

3x + 4.5y =150
is a statement of this requirement, where x equals the number of units
produced of product 1 and y equals the number of units produced of
product 2. Rewrite the equation in slope-intercept form and interpret
the meaning of the slope and y intercept. Solve for the x intercept and
interpret its meaning
Q 32
Portfolio Management A portfolio manager is concerned two stock
generate an annual income of $15000 for a client. Two stocks earn
annual dividends of $2.4 and $3.5 per share respectively. If x equal the
number of shares of stock 1 and y equals the number of share of stock
2 the equation
2.4x + 3.5y = 15000
States total annual dividends income from the two stocks should total
$15000. Rewrite the equation in slope-intercept form an interpret the
meaning of slope and y intercept in this application. Solve for the x
intercept and interpret its meaning.
Simple Interest
• When we borrow money from a lender (bank), we must pay a fee called interest.
The type of interest that we shall discuss here is called simple interest, which is
fixed percentage of the amount borrowed over a specified period of time.
• Borrowing transactions the amount of money borrowed is called the principal
and denoted by P
The interest that must be paid to the lender for each year money is held is
Pr
Thus, if we hold the money t years, the total interest due
I= Prt
Since the amount, A repaid after t years is the principal plus the interest, we have
A = P+I
A= P+ Prt = P(1+rt)
Example – 1
Suppose that you borrow $ 6000 at the simple interest rate 12 %
i. How much money do owe after t years
ii. How much money do you owe after 10 years?
iii. How much money do you owe after 8 months

A= P(1+rt)
i. A = 6000 ( 1 + 0.12 t )

ii. A = 6000 ( 1 + 0.12 x 10 ) = ?

iii. A = 6000 ( 1 + 0.12 x 0.66 ) = ?

Example
Suppose that you borrow $ 500000 at the simple interest rate 12 %
i. How much money do owe after t years
ii. How much money do you owe (0 to 10 ) years? A t
0 500000
1 560000
A= P(1+rt) 2 620000
3 680000
i. A = 500000 ( 1 + 0.12 t ) 4 740000
i. A = 500000 + 60000 t 5 800000
6 860000
ii. A = 500000 + 60000 x 10 = ? 7 920000
8 980000
9 1040000
10 1100000
