Introduction

 Fabric construction methods include weaving, knitting, felting, lacemaking, and bonding.
Since the way a fabric is constructed determines how it looks, handles, and behaves, it is
important to be able to recognize and tell the difference between common fabric
construction methods.
 Staple fibres make spun yarn and filament fibres make filament yarns. Process of
making yarn from fibres is called spinning. i) For making yarn from staple fibres –
A bundle of fibres is taken, cleaned and straightened. After this they are pulled
out and drawn and a twist is given to hold them together.
Yarn elongation measurement

 Yarn elongation measurement is a process used to determine the

stretchability of yarn. It's an important characteristic in various
industries, including textiles and manufacturing. The elongation is
typically expressed as a percentage, representing the increase in length
of the yarn when subjected to tension or stress. Various methods, such
as the skein method or the single yarn method, can be used to measure
yarn elongation accurately.
Steps of Yarn Elongation Measurement
 Prepare the sample: Take a length of yarn and secure both
ends to prevent slippage during testing.

 Initial length: Measure the initial length of the yarn

sample accurately using a ruler or a measuring tape.

 Apply tension: Apply a specific tension to the yarn

sample. This tension is usually determined based on the
specific standard or requirement you are testing for.
 Stretch the yarn: Gradually stretch the yarn until it reaches its maximum
elongation point.

 Measure elongation: While maintaining the tension, measure the length of

the yarn sample at its maximum elongation. This is the length the yarn has
stretched to under the applied tension.

 Calculate elongation: Calculate the yarn elongation percentage using the

following formula:Elongation Percentage = ((Final Length – Initial Length) / Initial
Length) * 100

 Record results: Record the elongation percentage and any other relevant data
for future reference.

Summary

Measuring the load elongation diagram of textile yarn involves subjecting

the yarn to tension while recording the resulting elongation at various
load levels. This helps understand its mechanical properties. The process
typically includes using a testing machine, such as a tensile tester, to
apply controlled tension to the yarn until it breaks, while a data
acquisition system records the load and elongation values. The results are
plotted on a load-elongation diagram, showing the yarn’s behavior under
stress. This summary provides a basic overview of the method used in
testing textile yarn.
