Case 1: The
Rubble of a Man
• Rufus Richardson was a lonely child. He was obsessed with puzzles and mysteries and
strove to become better than the life he inherited from his parents. Frequently bullied and
put-down, his most traumatic experience was when he overheard a teacher saying that he
would never achieve anything in life. He would never prove them wrong
• He would eventually become a Private Investigator. He attempted to join the police force,
but was horrified by their corruption. He was framed for planting evidence in a trail
against a mafia leader. The leader was released and he fired from his job. With little else
to do he sought to become a PI, but the scandal followed him everywhere he went. What
little relationships he had managed to kindle began to turn sour. Running out of money
and options he began to become a petty thief, stealing from most of his clients in order to
survive and turned to alcohol to forget his problems. The small pool of clients he had
began to dry out even more and so he became even more desperate. He took seedier and
seedier cases, and ironically became what he most despised, having a moment of
anagnorisis mid-way through a frame-job for a client.
• Realising his mistake, Rufus saw that he required help and started attending AA meetings
and refusing unethical jobs. A friend gave him a voucher to attend a popular seminar on
self-help(run by the Valkyries through the Knights). While there he made contact with the
Cassie Chang, a Knight, who – seeing Rufus’ potential – gave him a job, to investigate one
of the gangs that terrorises the streets of the City. She pushed him to be more aggressive,
more assertive and for a while this worked. One day, after slamming a teenager into a
brick wall to interrogate him, Cassie saw that he was ready. She convinced him that there
was some intel to be found at a tattoo parlour nearby, upon entering he was –
unknowingly – greeted by the rifts of Vulcan and Nimue who revealed that they would
only give up information if he became a client. He agreed and they made him into a
weapon – tattooing the symbol of the eye of Ra onto his body and awakening him. The
process was too much and he passed out. He awoke in an empty lot and staggered back to
Cassie who was waiting at a nearby club with some other Knights, where she revealed
that they had been planting evidence to see how far he would be willing to go for the sake
of the truth and righteousness. Instead of agreeing to join her cause, he rebelled and used
his Mythos for the first time to cause a blinding flash of light that evaporated everything
in his proximity, including Cassie and the knights. He managed to escape without
detection.
• Functionally homeless, from that point on, Rufus began to experiment with his powers
and realised that he could place the symbol of the eye of Ra onto surfaces and could then
detonate them remotely, leaving only ash and cinders in his wake. He has been planting
these bombs all over the city at hang out both at spots that gang members and Knights
gather as well as the police precinct. He has also been getting more and more tattoos to
cover up the one that is the source of his powers. He has been keeping a case file on
Cassie and the mysterious Tattoo parlour that came and went. He’s getting depper into
the iceberg.
• The crew first meets him at the scene of a bombing at a local youth gang hangout near
the mall. He saw a police officer plant evidence on a civilian being accused of shoplifting
and accidentally lost control of his glyph, causing it to detonate. With no time to escape
from the scene, he pretends to be the client of Cassie Chang, asked to look into the recent
bombings.
Character Roster,
suspects :
• The Rift of the Eye of Ra is Rufus Richardson (Touched) A stocky middle-
aged man covered in fresh tattoos, he wears cheap, ill-fitting formal shirts
and coffee-stained ties with worn and tired sneakers. His scruffy hair is
occasionally pushed back in a half-hearted attempt to look presentable. He
holds his body in such a way that implies great tension, as if he’s
concentrating on something with the combined might of his muscles and
mind As a result he’s frequently distracted and comes off as absent
minded at first glance. While he used to hold values of honesty, justice,
and truth, the ruin of his life and the corruption of the people around him
has caused him to become disenfranchised and fanatical. Finally open to
the reality of the mist, and seeing that the corruption lies even deeper
than what he thought, he believes that this part of the city need to be
destroyed and washed in fire to cleanse the rot.
• The Corrupt Police Chief is Jessica Lyons (Sleeper) A young woman who
has recently come into power, she was chosen and groomed from her first
day to become a successor to the corrupt Chief prior. Pliable to the mafia,
she was instrumental in defaming Rufus, though this was some years ago
in her infancy as a detective. Her corruption is partly orchestrated through
the Munkies, who want to spread a distrust for the powers that be so that
they are able to find more people to convert to their cause. She takes an
active interest in the case, as two of her best (most corrupt) men were
killed in the blast. She will do anything to find their killers, despite putting
the investigation into the original bombings on the backburner.
• The Bereft is Marcus Ng (Sleeper/Touched), whose partner died in the
original blast. Young, with short cropped hair and a sharp fashion taste, as
soon as he hears of the second explosion he rushes to it. He knows that
the two bombings are connected and is willing to tell anybody the truth.
He was outside the first club when it got vaporised and saw a figure
entering, he is unsure as to who it is, but may be killed by Rufus if he
catches wind of a possible witness. If ignored, he will raise a mob of
vigilantes or possibly be recruited and empowered by the Knights to find
and eliminate Rufus. Marcus was known to be adrift after the death of his
boyfriend and as such has done lots of research into bombs and how to
make them.
• The rift of the Crystal Ball is Diana Ovre (Awakened), in charge of the mall
security tapes. While the camera itself was destroyed, she is able to find
the recording of moments before the blast which clearly shows the officer
planting the evidence as well as Rufus catching sight of this. She will
continue to investigate and, using her mythos, find several of the
Hieroglyphs but believes them to be tags by a local gang that marks out
spots to bomb. She is known to be increasingly distant from her co-
workers and was to be fired before the bomb went off. She has had
strange dreams about the bomb and the explosion beforehand and has
written about it in her journal.
• The Gang is a group of rowdy youths, rivals to Xander’s group, that are
known to be particularly and increasingly aggressive. Both Jessica and
Locations
• Blythe Mall – the location of the bombing
• Bubbles – the club where the original bombing occurred
• Richardson Detecting – Rufus’ office which he has broken
into after it was repossessed and is now living in, in the blue
collar residential district
• The Police precinct – home to the corrupt cops and one of
the glyphs
• Marcus’ place – houses his thoughts on what happened,
also possibly Diana and may become another crime scene if
Rufus discovers what he knows
• Diana’s place – has the video tape, may become another
crime scene if Rufus discovers what she knows
• Rufus’ parents place – his mother lives here, she will be
able to tell the crew about Rufus’ troubles at home as well
as his favourite spot at the top of the hill where you can see
the sun rise over the water, near the docks
• Rufus’ spot. Where he intends to both immolate himself
and the Hieroglyphs he has placed. He has created a large
glyph in the ground that would allow him to amplify his
powers and cause the destruction he desires. If he believes
he is discovered and unable to eliminate the threat, he will
rush to the spot and attempt his plan
• The Knights may send either vigilante group or specific
individuals after Rufus once they catch wind of what he’s
doing.
