PAPER
ACTIVITY
Using Present Tense
Report Writing Skills
Objective:
To identify and use present tense in report
writing, by understanding its purpose.
When writing a report, the present tense is used
to express general truths, facts, or conclusions,
supported by research results that are unlikely
to change — in other words, something that is
believed to be always true.
Verbs
When sharing information, you’re not re-telling an
event, but stating information. Can you see the
difference in verb usage in the following sentences?

• The sun rises/rose in the east.

• The polar bear swims/swam in the Arctic Ocean.
Adjectives & Adverbs
When describing characteristics or qualities of a
subject, use present tense adjectives and adverbs.

For example, instead of saying "The building was tall

and imposing", you could say "The building is tall
and imposing".
Present Tense Vocabulary
• is • represents • illustrates
• are • describes • portrays
• has • depicts • provides
• eat • shows • displays
• walks • indicates • exhibits
Can you identify the present tense vocabulary used?

• Animals are classified into species types.

• Youth depicts a time of vitality and good health.
• Hippos are actually herbivores, meaning they
only feed on plants.
Sometimes exceptions arise if a fact is explicitly linked
to some point in the past. Often historical facts are
written about using past tense, as they literally
happened in the past, then writing reverts back to
present tense.

China, whose estimated population was 1,433,783,686

at the end of 2019, is the most populated country in the
world.
In summary, report text types classify, explain,
describe and give factual information about people,
animals, things or phenomena. For the most part,
these are written in present tense, with only a few
exceptions.
Welcome to Rainbow Falls, a magical place nestled
deep within an enchanted forest. As you step through
the lush greenery, the air is filled with the sweet scent
of wildflowers and the melodic symphony of chirping
birds. Sunlight peeks through the towering trees,
casting shimmering beams on the crystal-clear waters
below.
The falls cascade down the rocks, creating a
mesmerizing display of rainbow-colored mist. The
vibrant hues dance in the air, captivating your
senses and filling your heart with wonder. The
serene atmosphere invites you to dip your toes in
the cool, refreshing pool at the base of the waterfall.
The lush, emerald-green moss blankets the
surrounding rocks, inviting you to sit and listen to
the soothing sounds of nature. Rainbow Falls is a
place where dreams come alive, where nature's
beauty unfolds before your eyes, leaving you with
memories that will last a lifetime.
