Contactors

Contactors are switches which

handles heavy current and operate as a
result of the action of other switches or
relays . There are two types of contact-
ors used in diesel-electric locomotive.
CONTACTORS

Electro-magnetic contactors Electro-Pneumatic Contactors

( directly operated by only electricity.) (It is operated by electricity and air

Pressure combined.)

GFC,FPC,CK1,CK2,RFC,FSR Power Contactors(9), Reverser and

BKT
GENERATOR FIELD CONTACTOR (GFC).

This electro-magnetic contactor is to be

operated when traction generator output is required.

This contactor operates when the GFCO is ON ,

ECS in RUN, and throttle handle is advanced. As
this contactor contacts get closed, the low voltage
output from exciter generator starts supply current
to the main field of traction generator and thus it
starts power generation
FUEL PUMP CONTACTOR(FPC)

This contactor operates when battery switch is closed and

MCB(ALCO) or MFPB (DLW) is put ON.

The following low voltage circuit are controlled through

this contactor.

1. Starting Circuit
2. Fuel pump motor circuit.
3. Crank –case exhauster motor circuit.
4. Radiator fan circuit
5. Excitation circuit
6. Dynamic brake control circuit.
CRANKING CONTACTORS (CK1,CK2)
These contactors are provided for starting
the engine. CK1 connects + ve terminal of battery to
the + ve terminal of main generator and CK2 conn-
ects – ve terminal of Battery to – ve terminal of
generator.

FIELD SHUNT CONTACTORS(FSRs)

Six numbers of FSRs are placed on the back part

of control compartment. FSRs picks-up at the time
of series-parallel shunt combination and parallel
shunt combination.
RADIATOR FAN CONTACTORS(R1 & R2)

These two contactors are provided in all type

locomotive to operate the radiator fan.
R1 contactor operates through the temperature
switch T1 when the cooling water temperature
reaches 64*c and allow radiator fan to run at
designed slow speed through ECC.
R2 contactor operates through the temperature
switch T2 when the cooling water temperature
reaches to 74*c and allow the radiator fan to run at
designed fast speed through ECC.
Power Contactors

Three series (in series-parallel stage

of traction motor) and six parallel (in parallel
stage of traction motor) power contactors make an
electrical path for the flow of current from
traction generator to traction motors.

These EP contactors uses 72 volts (low

voltage) and 5.0 kg/cm2 controlled air pressure
which is required to operate them.
Braking Switches ( BKT): These switches are operated by control air pressure
and magnet valve. BKT has 2 position, Motoring and Braking, when the block is
on left side it is in motoring and if center block is on right side it is in braking.
Reverser (REV): Reversers are located in control compartment at bottom (REV-1
at left side and REV-2 at right side). These are Cam-drop switches operated by
control air pressure and magnet valve which is consisting of 2 Magnet Valve (MVs’)
one for forward direction and other for rear direction. The REV has 3 positions i.e.
forward, rear & centre (Manually operated). The function of Reverser is to change
the position of Traction Motor field by which traction motor armature rotation can be
reversed as desired. REV-1 controls TM No.1, 4,3,6 while REV-2 controls TM No.2,
5 only.
P32 are parallel Power Contactors. These contractors make an electrical path for the flow o
