SAMPLING AND SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION

OBJECTIVES:

• At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;

1. Illustrate random sampling;
2. Distinguish between parameter and statistics;
3. Construct histogram of sampling distribution of the sample means; and
4. Solve problems involving the sampling distribution of the sample means.
The following are their responses.

SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION
OF THE SAMPLE MEANS
TERMS TO REMEMBER:

• Population refers to the total set of observations that can be made.

• Sample is a subset containing the characteristics of a larger population.
* A population is the opposite to a sample, which is a fraction or a percentage of a group.
• Sampling is the selection of a subset from within a population to estimate characteristics
of the whole population.
• Sampling error is a certain amount of error from using a sample.
• Parameter is the descriptive measures computed from a population while Statistics is the
descriptive measures computed from a sample.
SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION OF THE SAMPLE
MEANS
The sample means obtained from
the data will form a frequency
distribution and the corresponding
probability distribution can be
constructed. This distribution is
called the SAMPLING
DISTRIBUTION OF THE
SAMPLE MEANS.
SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION OF THE SAMPLE
MEANS
Example 1. A population consists of five values (Php 2, Php 3, Php 4, Php 5
and Php 6). A sample of size 2 is taken from this population.
a. How many samples are possible?
b. Construct the sampling distribution of the sample means.
c. Construct the histogram of the sampling distribution of the sample
means.
SOLUTION:
STEP 1
Since the size of the population is 5, then n = 5 and the sample of size is 2,
therefore r = 2. The number of possible samples of size 5 that can be drawn
from this population is computed as follows.
C(n, r) = C(5, 2) =
The number of all possible
C(5, 2) = C(5, 2) = samples of size 2 is 10.
= 10

EXAMPLE 2

• A population consists of the number 2, 4, 9, 10 , and 5. List

all the possible samples of size 3 from this population and
compute the mean of each sample.
• The mean population is 2+4+9+10+5 divide 5 = 30/5 = 6
• There are 10 possible samples of size 3 that can be drawn
from the given population.
