What is
Chemical
Engineering?
•Chemical engineering is
an engineering field which deals
with the study of operation and
design of chemical plants as well
as methods of improving
production. Chemical engineers
develop economical commercial
processes to convert raw materials
into useful products.

The Human
Genome Project
•The project was a voyage of
biological discovery led by an
international group of researchers
looking to comprehensively study
all of the DNA (known as a
genome) of a select set of
organisms.

What is DNA
sequencing?
• DNA sequencing involves
determining the exact order
of the bases in DNA that
make up segments of DNA.
Because the Human
Genome Project aimed to
sequence all of the DNA of a
set of organisms, significant
effort was made to improve
the methods for DNA
sequencing.
Whose DNA was
sequenced by the
Human Genome
Project?
•The sequence of the human
genome generated by the Human
Genome Project was not from a
single person. Rather, it reflects a
patchwork from multiple people
whose identities were intentionally
made anonymous to protect their
privacy.

Who carried out
the Human
Genome Project?
• The sequencing of the
human genome involved
researchers from 20
separate universities and
research centers across the
United States, United
Kingdom, France, Germany,
Japan and China. The groups
in these countries became
known as the International
Human Genome Sequencing
Consortium.

Advantages and Disadvantages of The
Human Genome Project
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
• Predict and prevent diseases • Increased stress
• Improved medicine • Geneism
• Accurate diagnoses • Discrimination by employers and insurers
• Improve forensic science
Summary of The
Project
• The Human Genome Project is
an international research
project whose primary mission
is to decipher the chemical
sequence of the complete
human genetic material (i.e.,
the entire genome), identify all
50,000 to 100,000 genes
contained within the genome,
and provide research tools to
analyze all this genetic
information.
