What you mean by skills and what are core skills?
► Skill is an individual’s ability to translate knowledge into action or it can be defined
as, “Ability to perform certain physical or mental tasks, accurately, consistently &
meaningfully”.
► Skill is not necessarily inborn and can be developed through training and practice.
► There are four components of skills namely knowledge, expertise (gained by practice or
experience), attitude or willingness, and physical fitness.
► It means that one has to have knowledge about anything one wants to perform, one must
practice it for perfection and one should think it meaningful and enjoy doing it (attitude),
and have physical fitness / ability to perform the job.

What you mean by skills and what are core skills?
► There are two types of core skills required when you do any job namely hard & soft
skills.
► Hard skills like Computer programming, Welding, Masonry, Machine operating etc.
► Soft skills like speaking, writing, listening, presenting, attitude. and essentially people
skills
► People skills means how you interact with others and create good, healthy relationships.
► Shop floor supervisors essentially has to have hard skills pertaining to his
department as well as people skills to handle workers.

What is competence & competency?
► Someone who has the skills to do something well is considered competent.
► Competence refers to the ability to do something, usually at a basic or acceptable level.
► For example, It took Suresh several years to develop competence in welding to the point
where his foreman allowed him to do the task unsupervised.
► Competency refers to an area in which one has been professionally trained. For
example competency to appear in court as a lawyer.
► Competency is also defined as an underlying characteristic of a person which enables him
to deliver superior performance in a given job, role or situation”.
► When a person poses a combination of knowledge, expertise, ability & attitude (key
success factors) to perform a job successfully (a behavior) it is considered as his
competency.
► In general competence and competency are considered as one.

What is competency mapping competency map and profiling?
 Competency Mapping. Competency mapping is a process applied to identify and describe
competencies that are the most critical to success in a work situation or a work role.
 Competencies are required to perform successfully a given job or role or a set of tasks at a
given point of time.
 It consists of breaking a given role or job into its constituent tasks or activities (job
description) and identifying the competencies (technical, managerial, behavioral,
conceptual knowledge and attitude and skills, etc) needed to perform the same successfully.
 Competency Map . A competency map is a list of an individual’s competencies that represent
the factors most critical to success in given jobs, departments, organizations, or industries .
 Competency profiling - It is the process of identifying the knowledge, skills, abilities,
attitudes, and judgment required for effective performance in a particular occupation or
profession (job requirements).
