Example on flat belts

Design and draw a flat belt drive to transmit 30 H.P at 740 r.p.m to an Al
rolling mill. The speed ratio being 3. The distance between the pulleys is 3
m. The diameter of the rolling machine pulley is 1.2m.
Solution
Given Power = 30H.P, Speed(N) = 740rpm, speed ratio(i) = 3,
dist. btn pulleys, a=30m=3000mm &
dia. of rolling machine pulley(d2) = 1.2m = 1200mm.
What to determine?
Motor dia. d1.
Torque produced by motor, T
Tensions in the tight(T1) and slack(T2) sides of the belt.
 Value, width of the belt, length of the belt, actual length of the belt.
Solution continues.
Determine d1.
Assuming a reduction in speed
.
The torque T is got from the power, = 29kgm (from P = 2NT).
Let T1 & T2 be the tensions on the tight and slack side respectively,
Then
T = 29000kgmm, d1=400mm, then, (T1 – T2 )= 145kg.
But Also
Note: We neglect Te (but from could have a significant effect)
Note: Choosing a cast iron pulley and cotton belt from table 2, then =0.2.
And from table 7, we obtain . Assuming our drive is an Open belt drive, then
.
.
So, T1 = 333kg & T2 = 188kg.
From table 4, for fabric belt say for 8 plies, the permissible tension is
12.5kg/cm width.
Therefore the width of the belt required to with stand 333kg is given by,
.
Note: Next a check should be made for standard values for width. And the
next for this case is 280mm(Tables are not given)
Next check in table 5 for maximum belt width. The calculated value here
must not exceed the max belt width.
And if it exceeds, either increase the number of plies or choose a belt of
stronger material.
However, 280mm is within the permissible width given in table 5.
From table 6, the width of the pulley
= Width of belt +38 = 280+38 = 318mm.
The length of the belt is got from table 7.

The actual length of the belt, must be reduced by certain percentage. For
this case we reduce by 0.5%
Actual length = (100-0.5)% x 8566 =8523mm.
Specification of the belt drive.
Dia of motor pulley = 400mm
Dia of rolling m/c pulley = 1200mm
Center distance = 3000mm
Length of the belt = 8523mm
Width of the belt = 280mm
Width of the pulleys =318mm
Your input = to your results.

End for flat belts

Note:Standard widths’ of flat belts
•The standard values of nominal belt widths are in R10 series,
starting from 25 mm up to 63 mm and in R 20 series starting
from 71 mm up to 600 mm. Thus, the standard widths will be
25, 32, 40, 50, 63, 71, 80, 90, 100, 112, 125, 140, 160, 180,
200, 224, 250, 280, 315, 355, 400, 450, 500, 560 and 600 mm.
Example(v-belts)
Design and draw a V-belt drive to the following specifications . Power to be
transmitted 100 H.P, the speed of the driving wheel 1440 r.p.m, the speed
of the driven wheel is 400 r.p.m, the diameter of the driving wheel is 500
mm, the Centre distance is 2500 mm,
service is 16 hrs./day.
Solution.
The velocity ratio = =3.6
Therefore, diameter of the driven wheel.
then d2= 1800mm
The velocity of the belt, .
From Table 7, Assuming an open belt, the angle of contact is given by,
.
Angle of contact = 148.80 =2.6rads.
The pitch length of the belt from table 7 is given by,
.
For .
if we choose for extra heavy duty from table 17and with service factor
16hrs/day at 1440rpm(above 600rpm), them from T-17, Ka = 1.4.
So far we have rated power = 100HP, Ka = 1.4, then to determine Kd & Kc. we shall first
determine De in table-15.
De = d1 x Ke. But Ke is small diameter factor in table 16.
Speed ratio or velocity ratio = 3.6, hence Ke = 1.14. and d1 = 500mm
De =570mm.
From table 15, Section D, ends at 425, then we consider the next section, i.e. section
E.
For a belt of section E, Using table 18, We can find parameter Kd.
But we need plot the nominal length(inside) against section E in the table in order to
determine the correction factor for length, kd.
Nominal length = (Length in T-7)-(92mm check above table) = 8782 – 92 = 8690mm
From T18, Kd= 1.12
For Kc, we just need angle of contact,  = 148.80 and in table 13, Kc = 0.92
0
Then
Note: please check in table 14, whether a belt with section E can transmit that
designed H.P.
Yes it can otherwise you would be required to go back to table 17 and choose
anther service type, i.e. Heavy duty or medium duty etc. then repeat the
procedure.
To determine the number of belts required,
Number of belts = .
But H.P/Belt(Power rating/Belt of V-belts) is got from Table 15.
For section E, H.P/Belt =. But V=37.7m/s
Then H.P/belt = 4.2 belts, take 5 belts.
The inside length = 8782 – 92 = 8690mm
But above table 15, standard value = 9093mm
Pitch length = 9093 +92= 9185mm.
The centre distance(T-7) gives
.
Then a =2708mm
And from table 19. b=9.6mm, e=44.5mm, h=28.4mm, f = 29mm and
AI = 400.
Out side dia, of driving pulley = d1+2b = 519.2mm
Core dia of driving pulley= d1 - 2h = 443.2mm
Outer dia. of driven pulley = d2 +2b = 1819.2mm
Core dia. of driven pulley = d2 – 2h = 1743.2mm
Pulley width = 4e+2f = 236mm.
Specification of the drive
1. Pitch dia. Small pulley = 500mm
2. Pitch dia large pulley = 1800mm
3. Adjusted centre distance = 2708mm
4. Belt to be used = E9093
5. No. of belts = 5
6. Outer dia of driving wheel = 519.2mm
7. Outer dia of driven wheel = 1819mm
8. Width of pulley = 236mm.
Draw the arrangement
Notes about v-belts
• DESIGNATION OF V-BELTS
• V- BELTS are designated by cross section and nominal inside length as per standards. A
belt of section B and inside length 2286mm is designated by B2286. This belt will have a
nominal pitch length of 2286+46=2329mm.
•Belts are also manufactured in over and under size in pitch length. While the standard belt
is designated by grading number 50, the oversized belts are designated by a grading
number more than 50 For example,
a) B 2286 – 50 denotes standard length of belt of inner length 2286 mm and pitch
length 2329 mm.
b) B 2286 – 46 denotes a belt of pitch length which fall short from the standard length
by an amount = (50 – 46) x 2.5 = 10 mm. hence this represents a belt of length 2319 mm.
SIMILARLY
c) B 2286 – 52 denotes a belt of pitch length = 2329 + (52 – 50) x 2.5 = 2334 mm.
