DEFINICIÓN

La osteoporosis es una enfermedad ósea metabólica

progresiva que disminuye la densidad mineral ósea
(masa ósea por unidad de volumen), con deterioro de la
estructura del hueso.
Fisiopatología
El hueso se forma y se reabsorbe en forma
continua. Normalmente, la formación y
resorción óseas están equilibradas. Los
osteoblastos (células que forman la matriz
orgánica del hueso y su mineralización) y los
osteoclastos (células que resorben el hueso)
son regulados por la hormona paratiroidea
(PTH), la calcitonina, los estrógenos, la
vitamina D, diversas citocinas y otros
factores locales como las prostaglandinas.
