Disaster Risk Reduction and Management

TSUNAMI
Tsunami

- series of waves in a water body

caused by the displacement of a large
volume of water, generally in an
ocean or a large lake.
OTHER SOURCE OF
TSUNAMI

SUBMARINE OR UNDERWATER UNDERWATER

COASTAL LANDSLIDES EARTHQUAKE VOLCANIC ACTIVITY
SUBMARINE OR COASTAL LANDSLIDES

It is brought on by increased pore water pressure and groundwater seepage.

The amount of landslide debris that propels the water, its speed, and the depth it travels
to all affect the formation of tsunamis.
UNDERWATER EARTHQUAKE

An earthquake that takes place underwater at the bottom of a body of water,

particularly an ocean, is known as a submarine, undersea, or underwater
earthquake. In the Pacific along its Ring of Fire subduction zones, tsunamis
account for more than 80% of those that occur globally. When a big earthquake
ruptures, the faulting may generate a vertical slide that is sufficient to disturb
the surrounding ocean, resulting in the creation of a tsunami that will move
outward in all directions.
UNDERWATER VOLCANIC ACTIVITY
Underwater volcanic eruptions emit large volumes of volcanic material
which can displace the ocean and generate tsunami waves in the immediate
area.
NATURAL SIGNS OF A LOCAL TSUNAMI

Long Earthquake Sudden retreat or rise Rumbling sound of

of sea water approaching waves is
audible
PREPAREDNESS AND MITIGATION
(What to do before)
 Conduct advocay on tsunami awareness, preparedness and mitigation.
Regular tsunami drill should be conducted.
 Listen on your radio and other communication devices to know if there is a
tsunami warning if an earthquake occurs and if you are in coastal area.
 Assign a focal person to monitor and observe the water recession after an
earthquake.
 Be aware of the tsunami facts. This knowledge could save life. Share this
knowledge with your friends. It could save lives .
 If you are in school/ office and you hear there is a tsunami warning, you
should follow the advice of Teacher/ Head of Office.
RESPONSE
(What to do during)
 CAUTION: Move away from the beach immediately. If there noticeable recession in water away from the
shoreline.
 Move inland to predetermined higher ground immediately and stay there.
 Stay away from the beach, never go down to the beach to watch a tsunami coming.
 High, multi -story, reinforced concrete buildings are located in low- lying coastal areas. The upper floors of
the these buildings can provide a safe place to find refuge should there be a tsunami warning and you
connot move quickly inland to higher ground. Local Civil Defense procedure may however, not allow this
type evacuation in your area.
 Small buildings located in low- lying coastal areas are not designed to wishtand tsunami impacts. Do not stay
in these structures should there be a tsunami warning.
 Offshore refs and shallow areas may help break the force of tsunami waves, but large and dangerous waves
can still be threat to coastal residents in these areas. Stay away from all low- lying areas is the safest advice
when there is a tsunami warning.
REHABILITAT
ION
( What to do after)

 Stay away from flooded and damaged areas until officials say it is safe
to return.
 Stay away from debris in the water; it may pose a safety hazard to
boats and people.
 Save yourself, not your possession.
TSUNAMI ALERTS
MEANING ADVICE

TSUNAMI IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN.

MOVE TO HIGH GROUND OR
WARNING DANGEROUS COASTAL FLOODING AND
FURTHER INLAND IMMEDIATELY
POWERFUL CURRENTS POSSIBLE

STRONG CURRENTS AND WAVES MAYBE STAY OUT OF THE SEA WATER,
ADVISORY DANGEROUS TO THOSE IN OR NEAR THE AWAY FROM BEACHES AND
SEA WATER WATER WAYS

A DISTANT EARTHQUAKE HAS KNOW YOUR EVACUATION

WATCH OCCURRED AND A TSUNAMI IS ROUTE. BE READY TO ACT
POSSIBLE QUICKLY IF A WARNING IS ISSUED

INFORMATION NO THREAT OR VERY DISTANT EVENT

NO ACTION NEEDED AT THIS TIME
STATEMENT AND THREAT NOT DETERMINED
