Subject - Verb Agreement

 Presented by Prahit Narsaria

What is subject verb agreement ?
 The term ‘subject-verb agreement’, just like the
name suggests, refers to the agreement
between the subject and the verb. This is
mainly with reference to singular and
plural nouns/pronouns that act as subjects .
Rules for subject verb agreement
 The concept of subject-verb concord matters
the most when using the present tenses. The
simple past and simple future tenses have the
same verbs used irrespective of the subject in
the sentence.

 Following are the rules for subject – verb

agreement :-
Rule 1

 Singular subjects take singular verbs, and

plural subjects take plural verbs:

Example :-
 Singular subject: The cat is sleeping.
 Plural subject: The cats are sleeping.
Rule 2

 Compound subjects joined by "and" usually

take a plural verb:

 Example :-
 John and Mary are going to the party
Rule 3

 If the compound subject refers to a single

entity or idea, it takes a singular verb:

 Example :-
 Bread and butter is his favorite snack.
Rule 4
 Subjects joined by "or" or "nor" require a verb
that agrees with the nearer subject:

 Example :-
 Neither the dog nor the cats are causing any trouble.
(Since "cats" is nearer to the verb, we use a plural
verb.)
Rule 5

 n sentences beginning with "there is" or

"there are," the subject follows the verb:

Example :-
 There is a book on the table.
Rule 6

 Collective nouns can be singular or plural

depending on context:-

 Example :-
 The team is playing well. (Treating "team" as a single
unit.)
 The team are arguing about strategy. (Treating
"team" as individuals.)
Rule 7

 Indefinite pronouns like "everyone,"

"someone," "anyone," etc., are singular and
take singular verbs:

 Example :-
 Everyone is welcome to join.
Rule 8

 Titles of books, movies, and other works take

singular verbs:

 Example :-
 "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a classic novel.
Rule 9
 Expressions of time, measurement, and
amount are usually singular:

 Example :-
 Five miles is a long way to walk.
Rule 10

 Some nouns that are plural in form but

singular in meaning take singular verbs:

 Example :-
 Mathematics is her favorite subject.
