Summary
The Ramayana begins with sage
Valmiki asking Narada Muni to name
the ideal man on Earth. Narada tells
him about Rama, the prince of
Ayodhya.
Rama wins the hand of Princess Sita in
a swayamvara (a ceremony where a
princess chooses her husband from a
group of suitors) by stringing a mighty
bow.
Later, due to palace intrigue, Rama is
exiled for 14 years by his stepmother
Kaikeyi, who wishes her son Bharata to
become king. Sita and Lakshmana join
Rama in his exile.
While in the forest, Sita is abducted by
Ravana, who desires her. Rama and
Lakshmana undertake a quest to rescue
her, forming alliances with various
forest dwellers, including Hanuman and
the vanara (monkey) army.
Hanuman leaps across the ocean to
Lanka, confirms Sita's presence, and
delivers Rama's message. He then sets
Lanka on fire with his tail after Ravana
sets it ablaze as punishment for his
defiance.
The epic culminates in a massive battle
in Lanka, where Rama, with the help of
Hanuman and the vanara army, defeats
Ravana and rescues Sita.
Before accepting her back, Rama asks
Sita to prove her chastity, which she
does by undergoing a trial by fire. Sita
emerges unscathed, proving her purity.
The couple returns to Ayodhya, where
Rama is crowned king, marking the
beginning of Ramarajya, a period of
peace and prosperity.
However, doubts about Sita's chastity
arise among the populace, and Rama,
prioritizing his duty as king to uphold
public sentiment, sadly sends Sita into
exile in the forest.
The Ramayana teaches values of duty
(dharma), righteousness, loyalty, and
the strength of devotion. It emphasizes
the victory of good over evil and the
importance of adhering to one's
principles, no matter the challenges
faced.
