LESSON 1

PROCESS LAUNDRY ITEMS

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
Identify and explain the types of linen used in
housekeeping.
What is LAUNDERING?

Methods of washing, ironing and

folding clothes and linens.
 Laundering is another task that
must be present in the
hospitality industry such as
hotel establishments.
 Hotel linens and guests’
clothes must be laundered
appropriately to ensure
cleanliness and sanitation
within the hotel premises.
Hotels either have an on-premise laundry or an
off-site laundry.
 For bigger hotels, they have an on-premise laundry that is situated within their
premises wherein processing of laundering or dry cleaning of linen and clothes
can be done in the same place.

• An off-site laundry is outsourced or located outside hotel premises and is used

by smaller hotels.

TYPES OF
FABRIC USED AS
LINENS
COTTON
-highly versatile and
absorbent
-must be in soft cycle
-spinning and
bleaching must be
avoided
.LINEN
-more durable
than cotton
-easy to wash
and can
withstand
High
temperatures
SILK
-versatile, easily
absorbs moisture,
lustrous, and easily
dried.
-expensive,
flammable, dye is
not
favorable with them.
PAR STOCK
-minimum amount of linens needed to meet the
everyday demands
of the different departments of hotel
establishments.
Below are the reasons why maintaining par stock
is important:
1. Preventing over-stocking
2. Maximizing space
3. Ensuring enough supply at all times
TIPS FOR STORING LINENS
1. Linens used for food and beverage area and floor
must be stacked neatly and arranged by size.
2. Lower shelves must contain heavier linens while
lighter linens must be stacked on higher shelves.
3. Linens made of cotton such as pillowcases,
tablecloths, among others must not be stacked for a
long period.
4. For linens that must be stored for a longer period,
they must be wrapped with plastic foils or paper-
lined cartons after washing.
TYPES AND
USAGE OF
WASHING
MACHINES AND
DRYERS
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

Identify the types and usage of

washing machine and dryers.
WASHING MACHINES

Using the right wash cycle is very important as it protect the

clothes from getting damaged. Washing machines not only
save our time but also saves us from the physical effort
of hand-washing. Moreover, with technological advancements
in the washing machines, washing clothes have become more
convenient.
HOW DOES A WASHING MACHINE MAKE LIFE EASIER?

In the earlier times, women used to wash clothes using

their hands which used to squeeze all the energy out of
them. Thanks to this man-made wonder, Washing
Machine, life is much more relaxed and comfortable now!
You can wash clothes without constant physical labor and
thus save time.
FUNCTION OF WASHING MACHINE

Washing machine is the machine used to wash

the various types of clothes without applying
any physical efforts. With washing machine you
don't have to rub the clothes with hand or
squeeze them to remove the water from them.
DISADVANTAGES OF WASHING MACHINES

Some disadvantages of washing

machine are the electricity
consumption, detergent powder, and
much water it needs. Using a washing
machine really needs electricity to
operate so expect an additional electric
bill cost. It also uses much expensive
detergent powder instead of bar.
TOP LOAD WASHING
MACHINE

-most common type

-clothes are loaded at the
top
-People who do not want to
bend when loading or
unloading
the machine prefer this
type.
FRONT LOAD WASHING MACHINE

-Has opening at
the front side
-In the Philippines,
this type of washing
machine is not
common.
CONTINUOUS BATCH WASHERS

-For large volume of linens

in five star hotels
-May be controlled by a
computer to load,
unload, and dry linens
automatically
SEMI-AUTOMATIC WASHERS

-Have two tubs attached

-For washing and for dryer
FULLY-AUTOMATIC
WASHERS

-Have a single tub for

washing,
rinsing, and drying.
-When fully cycle is
complete,
clothes are fully dried
DRYER

A washer dryer is a washing machine with

an inbuilt tumble dryer, so if you need to dry
clothes quickly, it's a good option as it both
washes and dries your clothes in the same
cycle – so all you need to do is remove the
clothes from the machine and they're ready
to wear.
TYPES OF DRYER

TUMBLE DRYER

-use hot air in drying the

laundered items.
-Items rotate or tumble in
a large drum allowing it to
dry without creasing.
VENTED DRYER

-discharges water
using a two-
meter plastic
hose
CONDENSER DRYER

-Uses hot air that is

circulated
through clothes
similar to vented type.
HEAT PUMP DRYER

-Uses air that passes

through a heat pump to
condense water vapor
and then forward it to
the drain pipe into the
water chamber.
