Types of abdominal

pain
Definition
The pain that occurs between chest and
pelvic region.
Abdominal pain can be
crampy,achy,dull, intermittent or sharp.
It's also called stomachache or
bellyache.
Inflammation or disease that affect the
organs in the abdomen can cause
abdominal pain.

abdominal region

• Intestines(small and large)


• Kidneys
•Appendix(part of large intestine)
•Spleen
•Stomach
•Gallbladder
•Liver
•Genital organs
Causes
• Inflammatory causes
1- Infections like appendicitis, cholecystitis,
pancreatitis, pyelonephritis, hepatitis,
mesenteric adenitis
2- Perforation of a peptic ulcer,a
diverticulum,or the caecum
3- Inflammatory bowl disease like Crohn's
disease and ulcerative colitis
•Mechanical causes
1-Small bowel
obstruction,intussusception,hernias,benign
or malignant neoplasm
2- Large bowel obstruction caused by
colorectal cancer, volvulus,fecal impection of
hernia
• Vascular causes
1- occlusive intestinal ischemia
2- Thromboembolism of superior mesenteric
artery
• Other Common Causes
1- Constipation
2- Diarrhea
3- Gastroenteritis
4- Epigastric acid reflux
5-Vomiting
6- kidney stones
7- Gallbladder stones
8- lactose intolerance (The inability to digest
lactose)
9- gastroesophageal reflux disease
10- irritable bowel sydrome or spastic colon
11-Cramps associated with
mensturation(also known as pelvic pain)
12- Common Pains during pregnancy
Types of abdominal pains
1- Localized pain
• The pain limited to one area of the
abdomen.These are caused by problems in a
particular organ such as most common
stomach ulcers, intestinal ulcers
2- Cramp-like pain
•This type of pain associated with diarrhea,
constipation, bloating, flatulence, vomiting.
• In women,it can be associated with
mensturation, miscarriage or complications
in female reproductive organs.
3- Colicky Pain
• This pain occurrs during more severe
conditions like gall stones,kidney stones.This
pain occurrs suddenly and feel like severe
muscle spasms.
4- Referred pain
• Produced by infection in one location but
felt another location
5- Visceral pain
•This originates in abdominal organs covered
by peritonium like hunger pang
