Background Info about the style
Watercolor tattoos are exactly what their name would lead you to believe, they are
tattoos that resemble watercolor paintings. They have been around for thousands of years,
when tribes would use natural dyes and pigments for color. Due to its unique coloration,
this style tends to age poorly and fade more quickly than other tattoo types. This style is
common in tattoos that feature nature and animals. Watercolor tattoos regained popularity
in the late 2000s’ and early 2010s’.

Meaning behind Them
Many of the tattoos in the style of watercolor typically depict an animal, image, flower, and even
phrases. These images seem simple enough, but like all tattoos, they have meaning. The fluidity of
the watercolor visual effect can resemble the fluidity of water and resonate feelings of serenity or
optimism. Some tattoos of phrases or biblical verses are complemented by the various purples, blues,
and pinks. The vibrancy of the colors only emphasize the message presented, supplying a visual of
the strength behind the words. Additionally, the choice of colors (typically ranging among pink, blue,
purple, & red) are meant to offer ethereal, carefree, and happy feelings.

These tattoos are especially meaningful because of the appeal they give off through the colors of the
tattoo. They evoke uplifting feelings through their visuals and you can’t help but be drawn to them
and begin to understand the meanings behind the tattoos a little more clearly due to the colors acting
as a guide for the tone (meaning) of the tattoo.
