SPECIES
We should protect animals in danger of
becoming extinct.
■ We know that, beside the destruction of their habitats,
international trade is the greatest threat to the survival of
many endangered species.
■ Since 1977 People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES)
has been helping to ensure a future for many
endangered species throughout the world.
THE ANIMALS ARE:
Leopards, both African and Asian species,
face a severe threat of extinction
primarily due to habitat loss, poaching,
human-wildlife conflicts, climate change,
and a lack of legal protection. The
destruction of their natural habitats,
illegal wildlife trade, and conflicts with
humans over livestock contribute to the
decline in leopard populations. Climate
change further exacerbates these issues.
Conservation efforts, including the
establishment of protected areas, anti-
poaching measures, and community-
based initiatives, are crucial for the
survival of these endangered big cats.
THE ANIMALS ARE:
The blue whale, the largest animal on
Earth, is endangered due to historical
whaling, collisions with ships, climate
change, and ocean noise pollution.
Despite international protections, illegal
whaling remains a threat. Conservation
efforts include measures to mitigate ship
strikes, research on behavior and
population dynamics, and addressing
climate-related impacts. Ongoing
international cooperation, sustainable
marine resource management, and public
awareness are crucial for the
conservation of this iconic species.
THE ANIMALS ARE:
Polar bears, adapted to life in the Arctic,
face endangerment primarily due to
climate change. The melting of sea ice,
their essential hunting platform, leads to
longer fasting periods and disrupts
reproduction. Pollution, oil and gas
development, and disturbances also
threaten these bears. Classified as
vulnerable, polar bears are protected by
international agreements, but effective
conservation requires global efforts to
mitigate climate change, preserve their
habitat, and promote sustainable
practices in the Arctic.

THE ANIMALS ARE:
The giant panda, native to China, faces
endangerment primarily due to habitat
destruction caused by deforestation and
fragmentation for agriculture and
development. With a diet mainly
consisting of bamboo, pandas are
vulnerable to changes in bamboo
availability. Their low reproductive rates
and susceptibility to climate change add
to the challenges. Classified as
endangered, conservation efforts involve
creating reserves, captive breeding
programs, and engaging local
communities in sustainable practices.
Despite these efforts, ongoing initiatives
are critical to ensuring the long-term
survival of this iconic species.
