An Introduction to
Dinosaurs
2 CENTURIES AND 4 DECIMALS AGO THERE WERE DINOSAURS.
The first ever description of a dinosaur fossil had been by Robert Plot, first director of
the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford in his Natural History of Oxford-shire of 1677. It
was the distal end of a femur and had been found in the village of Cornwell in
Oxfordshire.
SIR Richard Owen came up with the word “dinosaur" in 1841. He needed a new word
to describe the fossils of extinct reptiles that were being discovered. “Dinosaur" was
created by combining the Greek words dinos, which means “terrible giant and saurus,
which means “lizard."
APPEARENCE
Now we will tell you about dinosaur’s appearance.
Dinosaurs show some of the most extreme
variations in size of any land animal group,
ranging from tiny hummingbirds, which can
weigh as little as two grams, to the extinct
titanosaurs, which could weigh as much as 50–
100 t (55–110 short tons). Some dinosaurs, like
Ornithomimus and Gallimimus, did not have
teeth. On the other end of the
spectrum, Tyrannosaurus rex had 50 to 60 solid
cone-shaped teeth as big as bananas. Hadrosaurs,
or duck-billed dinosaurs, had the most teeth: up to
960 cheek teeth! Dinosaur teeth were
replaceable. There were some with there special
abilities that you can sea in the picture here.
THE ERA OF
DINOSAURS
Dinosaurs lived during the Mesozoic Era, which is often
referred to as the "Age of Dinosaurs." The Mesozoic Era
spanned from approximately 252 million years ago to 66
million years ago and is divided into three major periods:
the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. Each period within
the Mesozoic Era had its own distinct environmental
conditions and a variety of dinosaur species adapted to
those habitats. It was a time of significant evolution and
diversification for these fascinating creatures before their
eventual extinction at the end of the Cretaceous Period,
marking the transition to the Cenozoic Era.
