Shays Rebellion
What was Shays Rebellion? Shays Rebellion was an event that occurred on September 1786. This event was lead by Daniel Shay, a poor farmer who was a war veteran who fought in the Revolutionary war who was angered by the government. In August 1786, farmers in three western countries began to revolt. Groups of angry citizens closed down courts in western Massachusetts. Their reasoning was that if the courts were closed then no property could be taken away. On September, Shay lead hundreds of men in a forced shutdown of court in Springfield, Massachusetts. The state government threated the farmers of capture and death. This only encouraged the rebels even more. The uprising of farmers to protest high taxes and heavy debt became known as Shays Rebellion. On January 1787, Shays forces were defeated by state troops. By February many of the rebels were in prison. During their trials, 14 leaders were sentenced to death. How did Shays Rebellion show the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederations? Shays Rebellion showed how the Articles of Confederation had many flaws. For one thing, the government werent allowed to draft men to join the army which meant that the government couldnt control the rebels. Citizens felt a lack of security, protection, and safety .
