Brainstorming Questions
 Do you simply blame yourself for personal failures, or can you additionally identify transitory and

specific contributing factors?

 How do you manage when you’re stressed?
 Let us say you get a bad grade while you are expecting an “A”. What do you do?
Stress can be defined as a state of worry or
mental tension caused by a difficult
situation.
stress refers to two things:
• the body's reaction to pressure, which
involves several systems including the
metabolism, muscles, memory
• the psychological impression of
pressure on the mind.
It’s our belief that we won’t be capable to
cope with the problems or challenges
we’re facing.
It’s impossible to eliminate stress
completely, but it’s important to establish
our ways around it, and figure out how to
manage, and cope with it.
Generally, stress can emanate from
three main reasons, namely major life
changes, catastrophe, and daily life
hassles.
Major life changes
 Major life changes are sudden
changes in routine, habits, and
activities in one’s life.

 Any big change can cause in

disruption in the pathways our
brains has already established for
things we’ve experienced and
learned.

 Sudden changes cut those

pathways, and signals the brain to
be on guard, which in turn causes
stress.
Catastrophe
 Catastrophe is an event causing
great and usually sudden damage
or suffering.

 It includes events such as war,

natural disasters like earthquake,
flood, and forest fire etc.

 People frequently experience a

variety of psychological impacts
during a disaster, and causing
discomfort or mental illnesses.
Daily life hassles
 Daily life hassles are everyday minor
activities or concerns that can be interpreted
as minimally stressful, frustrating, or
irritating.

 Both negative, and positive changes require

some kind of physical, and mental
adjustment.

 Life events ranging from the birth of a new

child, reunion with a loved one or winning the
lottery, to divorce, financial hardship, or a
death in the family, and more have affecting
depending on the individual’s ability to deal
with them.
Coping with stress
 A prolonged exposure to stress can have detrimental effects on the body and mind, causing health complexations such as obesity,
heart disease, diabetes, and depression etc.
 One should strive for ways to cope with stress, and avoid suffering as much as humanly possible. If not dealt with carefully it can
lead to major health complications. There are two basic ways of coping with stress .

1 Problem focused coping – this method involves addressing the problem or the stressor directly in an attempt to get
rid of it. Its an objective method of coping with stress and minimizing its after effects.

2 Emotion focused coping – this method is used when there is no way of handling or changing the situation head
on. Instead, it involves managing emotional responses to the situation.

 Choosing which method of stress coping method is absolutely subjected to the individual. When faced with
challenges, some tend to use problem focused coping, whilst others choose emotion focused coping .
Resilience
 The process and result of effectively adjusting to
trying or demanding situations in life is resilience,
particularly when it comes to behavioral, emotional,
and mental flexibility and adjusting to both internal
and external challenges.
 Or in simple words, it’s the ability to stand back up
after facing life’s challenges, and adversities.
Strategies for becoming Resilient:
• developing a positive attitude, and optimism
• being capable enough to regulate emotions, and
• the ability to see failure as a form of motivation are
used in becoming a resilient individual.
 Since difficult life situations are unavoidable,
becoming resilient and persisting on going forward
regardless of the matter is aspirational.
Brainstorming Questions
 What if you are given a chance to choose between your father and mother, who
would you choose, and why?
 Assume that you are in the middle a desert and a wind storm or a tornado started at
some distance from you. What do you do to escape the tornado?
Critical, and Creative Thinking
 Critical thinking is a purposeful, self-regulatory  Creative thinking may be defined as the
judgment which results in interpretation, formulation of possible scenarios or
evaluation, inference, and explanation of the possible solutions to a problem or
evidential, contextual considerations upon explanations of a phenomenon.
