2 Measures of dispersion (Ungrouped data)

The measures of center, such as mean, median, and the mode, do not reveal the
whole picture of the distribution of a data set. Two data sets with the same mean
may have completely different dispersion.

In this section we are going to present measures that will tell us how the
data set spread a round the mean.
 Example

Consider the following two data sets on the ages of some workers of two small companies:
Company 1: 47 38 35 40 36 45 39
Company 2: 70 33 18 52 27
The means age of workers of both these companies are the same.

The following figure shows that, the ages of the of the workers at company 2 have a much larger variation
than the ages of the workers at company 1.

 Simplest measure of dispersion (Variation)


 Difference between the largest and the smallest values:

Range = Maximum value – minimum value

1, 2, 4, 4, 6, 8, 8 , 8, 9, 11, 11, 12, 13


 Example

 Example Find the range of the following data.

Why the Range Can Be Misleading?

1. Ignores the way in which data are distributed

2. Calculations depends on only two values.

3. Sensitive to outliers [affected by the outliers] (nonresistant)

respectively. Find the variance.
