Introduction
"Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it,
and gave it to the disciples and said, 'Take, eat; this is my body.' And he
took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them,
saying, 'Drink of it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant,
which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.'" (Matthew
26:26-28)

What is The Eucharist?
EUCHARIST - derived from the Greek word “eucharistia” which means
THANKSGIVING. A Sacrament of Initiation that nourishes a person as
member of Christ’s body.

SACRAMENT and a SACRIFICE in which our Saviour Jesus Christ, body and
blood, soul and divinity, is contained, offered and received under the appearances
of bread and wine.
INSTITUTION OF THE EUCHARIST

• In the upper room at the last supper.

He took the bread, blessed and broke it and giving it to his Apostles, and He
said.
“Take and eat; this is my body… took the cup of wine ,
blessed it and giving it to them…

Commission the Apostles: “Do this in remembrance of Me”

6
WHY IS IT CALLED THANKSGIVING?

• It is thanksgiving for it is a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the

Creator, a blessing by which the Church expresses her gratitude
to God for His work of creation, redemption, and sanctification.

REAL PRESENCE - The sacramental presence of Jesus Christ
in the Eucharist

• Jesus Christ is, in many different ways, present to his Church: in the scriptures, in Church's
prayer, and in each person-for where two or three are gathered in His name Jesus is present-in
the poor, the sick, the imprisoned, and in the person of the minister.
• But above all, "HE IS PRESENT MOST ESPECIALLY IN THE EUCHARISTIC
SPECIES" Thus, the presence of Christ can be experienced in the CONGREGATION, IN
THE PRIEST AND IN THE EUCHARISTIC SPECIES.
• The mode of Christ's presence under the EUCHARISTIC SPECIES is unique. In the most
blessed sacrament of the Eucharist "THE BODY AND BLOOD, TOGETHER WITH THE
SOUL AND DIVINITY, OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST AND, THEREFORE, THE
WHOLE CHRIST IS TRULY, REALLY, AND SUBSTANTIALLY CONTAINED“.

That is to say, it is a substantial presence by which
Christ, God and human, makes Himself wholly

and entirely present.
Sacrificial Memorial of Christ
The Eucharist is the memorial of Christ's
Passover
The sacrifice of Christ on the Cross and the sacrifice that is happening in the Eucharist are one
single sacrifice; the SAME CHRIST WHO OFFERED HIMSELF ONCE IN A BLOODY
MANNER ON THE CROSS WHO IS OFFERED HERE IN THE EUCHARIST IN AN
UNBLOODY MANNER.

It is right, then, to say that the EUCHARISTIC SACRIFICE is not a new event for it already
happened on the Cross. And while it is true that the sacrifice of the mass is not new, it is also
true to say that the Eucharistic sacrifice is not a repetition of what had happened on the cross,
for it makes present Christ’s sacrifice of the cross. The victim is one and the same-Christ
Himself-only the manner of offering is different.
WHAT IS SACRIFICE?

• Is the offering of a victim by a priest to God alone, and the destruct ion of it in some
way, to acknowledge that HE is the Creator and Lord of all.
 Man offers sacrifice to God, in acknowledgement of His supreme power and in
gratitude for his gifts especially for the gift of life.

 We must repay God for His gifts especially for the invaluable gift of life.

 From the very beginning of the world, men have acknowledged God’s
existence and power by offering sacrifice
12
PURPOSE OF THE SACRIFICE..

To give honor or adoration, to God, to offer Him thanks, to beg a favor, or to

make propitiation.
(adoration, thanksgiving, petition and atonement)
The Sacrifice of the Eucharist as the central act of worship of the
Catholic Church. The "Mass" is a late form of missio (sending), from which the
faithful are sent to put into practice what they have learned and use the graces
they have received in the Eucharistic liturgy. The Mass cannot be understood
apart from Calvary, of which it is a re-presentation, memorial, and effective
application of the merits gained by Christ.
13
TRANSUBSTANTIATION
• The official Catholic Church’s teaching that the
substance of the bread and wine is changed into the
substance of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ at
the consecration of the Mass

15
WHO CAN RECEIVE THIS
SACRAMENT AND WHAT IS ITS
EFFECT?
THE RECIPIENT

o The RECIPIENT must be a baptized person, for

without baptism no other sacrament can be
validly received, since baptism is the "spiritual
door" that gives access to the other sacraments.

17
EFFECTS
• The principal EFFECT of the Holy Eucharist is the Union with Christ by love, the union which does
not consist in the sacramental reception of the Host, but in the spiritual union with Jesus by the
theological virtue of love. "Whoever eats Me will live because of Me." (John 6:57).

• The SECOND EFFECT is an increase of sanctifying grace. The reception of Christ’s Body and Blood
increases the grace that would help us feel and think about the love and goodness of Christ, thus, helping
us live a holy life in every simple way. This, however, is effective only to those who wholeheartedly
accept it.

• Another effect is that the Eucharist is the "PLEDGE OF OUR GLORIOUS RESURRECTION AND
ETERNAL HAPPINESS" , for as Christ has promised, "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood, has
everlasting life,” and that He will raise us up on the last day.
WHAT ARE THE OTHER NAMES OF THIS SACRAMENT?
THE LORD’S SUPPER

• This is because of its connection with Christ’s

supper with his disciples on the eve of his
Passion and its anticipation with the wedding
feast of the Lamb in the heavenly Jerusalem.

20
BREAKING THE BREAD

• This is because this was the rite that

Jesus used before He distributed the
Eucharistic Bread at the Last Supper

21
EUCHARISTIC ASSEMBLY

• This because it is celebrated amidst the

assembly of the faithful, the visible
expression of the Church

22
HOLY SACRIFICE

• This is because it makes present the sacrifice

of Christ on the cross and includes the
Church's offering.

23
HOLY AND DIVINE LITURGY

• This is because it is the central part of the

whole liturgy of the Church, and we also call
this celebration as Sacred Mysteries.

24
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
The Liturgy of the Eucharist displays two great parts that form a
fundamental unity.

First is the LITURGY OF THE WORD. This includes the readings, homily,
and general intercessions.

Second is the LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST. This part includes the

presentation of the bread and wine, the consecratory thanksgiving, and
communion.

Preparation of the Altar and the Gifts: bread & wine,

food and drink - symbols of the life which we want to
bring to the altar, “from God to God.” With ourselves,
we also offer good works, sufferings, etc., then the
collection.
Consecration: remembering and doing the Last Supper.
Jesus, the Risen Lord becomes present, fully alive both
in the Bread and in the Wine. The celebrant & people
now offer real gift to the Father, Jesus Himself.
Christ offers Himself again as He did in Calvary, but
now, with us and His Body & Blood, in the form of
Bread & Wine - in the form of our gifts

MATTER AND FORM
• THE BREAD AND THE WINE are the two Eucharistic elements
that constitute the remote MATTER of the Sacrament. It is where the Body and
Blood of Christ are truly present.

• The words of Institution, ("THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU"

AND "THIS CUP WHICH IS POURED OUT FOR YOU IS THE NEW
COVENANT IN MY BLOOD”) on the other hand, are the FORM of this sacrament.
