Acceleration
MOTION

 is the change in position of an

object with respect to its
surroundings in a given interval
of time. The motion of an object
with some mass can be described
in terms of the following:
TYPES OF MOTION
 distance
 displacement
 speed
 velocity
 time
 acceleration
SPEED

 is the distance an object travels

per minute. To calculate the
speed of a moving object, the
formula below is used.
S = d/t
EXAMPLE:
THE RUNNER REGISTERED A TIME OF 10 SECONDS TO
COVER THE 50-METER DISTANCE, WHAT IS HIS SPEED?

 Solution: S = D/T
= 50 m/10 s
= 5 m/s
VELOCITY

 is
the speed of a
moving object
towards a specific
direction. Formula:
V = D/T
EXAMPLE:
A SPRINTER RUNS 100 M IN 10 SECONDS GOING SOUTH, WHAT IS HIS
VELOCITY?

 Solution: V=D/T
= 100 m/ 10 s
= 10 m/s, South
ACCELERATION
 is the change in velocity over time.
Deceleration is the negative
acceleration. Acceleration is affected by
the mass of a body and the amount of
force applied to it. To solve problems
involving acceleration, formula below is
used.
Acceleration = final speed - initial
speed
Time
EXAMPLE:
A CAR MOVES FROM REST (0) TO 20 M/S IN 10 SECONDS. WHAT IS THE
ACCELERATION OF THE CAR?

 Solution: Acceleration = final speed - initial speed

Time
= 20 m/s - 0
10 s
= 2 m/s2

distance, what is his speed?
2. A sprinter runs 150 m in 15 seconds going South, what is his
velocity?
3. A car moves from rest (0) to 50 m/s in 10 seconds. What is the
acceleration of the car?
4. What is the speed of a car, if the distance it travel is 300 km in 20
minutes?

YOUR SOLUTION. (3PTS EACH) 5 MINUTES TO ANSWER.
1. An airplane accelerates down a runway at 3.20 m/s 2 for 32.8 seconds until is finally lifts off
the ground. Determine the distance traveled before takeoff.

2. What is the speed of a train, if the distance it travels is 100 km in 20 minutes?

3. A race car accelerate from an initial velocity of 10 m/s to a final velocity of 30 m/sin a time
interval of 2 seconds. Determine its average acceleration.

4. A car starts its motion from rest with a constant acceleration of 4 m/s 2, what is the average
velocity of the car in the first 5 seconds of the motion?

5. A person jogs 4.0 km in 32 minutes, then 2.0 km in 22 minutes, and finally 1.0 km in 16
