What is Sports Writing?
• Telling a sports story through the use of journalistic writing
method.
• One of the most popular forms of modern journalistic writing.
• While many can talk about sports, there are only few who can
write a sports story.
• It takes more than just answering the 5 W’s and 1 H to be able to
come up with a comprehensive sports news story.
Characteristics of a Sports Writer

• Has the “nose for news” (attending games, meets as a reporter , not
as spectator or cheerer).
• Has interest in various kind of sports.
• Has the working knowledge on sports lingo in a particular
game(rules, strategy, team record and other stuffs about the game
and players).
• Has observes accuracy (facts, statistics, spelling grammar and
personal comments).
Qualities of Sports News

• It is based on facts.
• It is accurate and balance.
• It answers the five W and H (what, who, when, where, why,
and how).
• It describes the excitement and thrilling part of the game.
• It uses forceful and precise verb, colorful but exact
descriptions and special vocabulary called the sports lingo.

Sports Story Format
• 1ST PARAGRAPH:
ANSWER THE QUESTIONS “WHO,” “WHAT,” “WHY” AND “HOW.”
• 2ND PARAGRAPH:
EXPLAIN JUST “WHY” AND “HOW,” THEN ANSWER THE QUESTIONS “WHERE” AND “WHEN.”

• 3RD PARAGRAPH:

EXPLAIN THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE GAME (E.G. WIN-LOSS RECORDS)

• 4TH PARAGRAPH:

GET A MEANINGFUL QUOTE FROM THE WINNING PLAYER/COACH/TEAM

• 5TH PARAGRAPH:

DESCRIBE THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE GAME – THE GAME-WINNING PLAY, THE TURNING POINT, THE CRUCIAL ERROR.

Tips in writing sports news story
• Attend a live sporting event and experience the excitement of the game.

• It can be so much easier to write an article about a player or a game that


you witness firsthand.

• Make notes of the points you want to cover in your article before you
begin to write.

• Creating an outline can help organize your thoughts and provide a


structure for your writing.
How to develop and improve writing skills
• Read newspapers and learn to read as a writer/writing teacher/writing student.
• Read the sports section- everyday or as often as possible.
• Enjoy reading the sports section
• Have a compilation of sports stories they like. The more diverse the articles selected, the
better.
• Compile sample sports stories from
A. Team contests
B. Physical combat events (boxing, taekwondo, judo)
C. Individual scoring (bowling, archery)
D. Timed events (sprints, marathon, swimming, cycling)
E. Judged events (dance sports, gymnastics, diving)
* Watch sporting events on TV and during live game situations.
* Learn how to analyze data (e.g. Numbers, sequence, etc.)
* Learn how to take notes during games
* Learn how to ask questions before and after the games.
* Learn how to behave when covering games
* Write sports stories – even if the material is fiction based.
* Understand the value of rewriting
* Understand that reading is key to becoming and effective and
efficient writer- communicator.
