The Great Rebellion
• The Great Rebellion took place in England from 1642 to 1651.
This war was between Charles I and his son Charles II.

• The war started when Charles I decided to raise an army against


the Parliament to suppress a rebellion in Ireland

• After a long time, the war ended in 1651 when Charles II fled to France.
To hopes of having a British monarchy ended
Events of the Great Rebellion
• Edgehill (1642): The first major battle of the war resulted in a
draw between the Royalists and Parliamentarians.

• Execution of Charles I (1649): King Charles I was tried and


found guilty of high treason by a court established by the
Parliamentarians. He was executed by beheading on January 30,
1649.
Spanish Succession
• In 1690, another war broke out in Europe called the
Spanish Succession. At the time Spain was ruled by the childless King
Charles II of Spain
• Louis XIV of France and William III of England tried
to partiton Spain and to avoid any war
• When Charles II dies, he had no heir so on his deathbed, Charles
II offered the empire to Philip, the grandson of Louis XIV

• Although Europeans accepted the decision, they soon turned
against Philip and King Louis XIV of France

• Britian and several European allied to declare war to France.

• After many great losses on both sides, both sides finally led to a
peace agreement
Events of the Great Succession
• The formation of alliances between different countries, with Britain,
the Netherlands, and Austria opposing France and Spain

• The death of Charles II of Spain in 1700, who left no clear heir

• The Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, which ended the war and secured the
succession of the House of Bourbon to the Spanish
