OBJECTIVES

By the end of this presentation, the students will be able to:

 Define clinical decision support systems (CDSS).
 State the components of CDSS.
 Describe the process of CDSS.
 State the purpose of CDSS.
 List the types of CDSS.
 Describe the application of CDSS in nursing.
 State the benefits and possible harms of CDSS.
INTRODUCTION
 People make decisions every day. some of them are
not easy. All actions and deeds of a person in any area
of life are the results of decision-making processes.
 It is often necessary to make an important decision
quickly, and having a system that can help make the
right decisions is of great value.
 DDS are information systems that support corporate
or entrepreneurial businesses that are in some way
related to decision making.

INTRODUCTION
CONTD.
 Medical errors are one of the main problems in the
healthcare field, as a result of advances in
information technology, the method was used to
improve medical services and patients’ health.
 One of the most important and applicable
information systems is clinical decision support
systems (CDSS).

WHAT IS CLINICAL DECISION
SUPPORT SYSTEMS (CDSS)?

Clinical decision support system (CDSS) comprises any IT system,

workflow, or activity designed to deliver:
 Correct information (clinical need or evidence based guidance);
 The right people (care teams, doctors, nurses or patients);
 Through multiple channels (e.g., mobile device, electronic health records
or online portal);
 In the correct formats (e.g., order sets, routings, patient list, dashboards);
 At the right time in the workflow (for decisions or actions).

COMPONENTS OF CDSS

There are three essential components of CDSS namely:

CLINICAL DECISION
SUPPORT SYSTEM
PROCESS
 The user enters patient information, such
as vital signs, allerges, test results etc. into
the system or another interfacing system.
 The interference engine then takes this
information and compares it with the
information available in the knowledge
database.
 An alert will generate if the information
entered meets the criteria of the rules
programmed in the knowledge database.

PURPOSE OF CDSS
The main purpose of CDSS
is to provide timely
information, usually at the
point of care, to help
inform decisions about a
patient's care.

CHARACTERISTICS
OF CDSS
There are three key elements of a successful
CDSS namely:
 Access to accurate clinical data.
 Access to patient medical knowledge.
 Ability to use appropriate problem solving
skills.

TYPES OF CDSS

Knowledge based systems Non-knowledge based systems

This creates rules (IF-THEN statements) This is CDSS that requires the data
in which the system extracts data to source but use artificial intelligence
evaluate the rule and produces an action (AI), machine learning (ML), or
or inference. Rules can be created using statistical pattern recognition instead of
literary, practical or patient centered programming their medical expertise.

CDSS can be applied in nursing in the following ways;
1. Enhanced diagnosis and decision making: AI alogorithms can
analyse vast amounts of patient data such as medical records
and diagnostic images to assist nurses in accurate and timely
diagnosis. They can also provide;
 Evidence-based recommendations.
 Flag potential risks.
 Facilitate personalized treatment plans.

2. Clinical decision support: CDSS enhance nurses’ ability to make
clinical decisions. It can offer predictions and suggestions with
accuracy and specificity beyond human capacity. Some of which
include;
 Automatically generating nursing diagnoses.
 Fall risk prediction.
 Care plans to prevent catheter-associated urinary tract infections,
etc.

3. Predictive analytics and early intervention:
CDSS can identify patterns and trends in patient
data to predict adverse events. This enables nurses
to intervene proactively, providing timely care and
preventing complications.

4. CDSS monitoring systems can continuously
analyse patient vital signs, detect anomalies and
issue alerts when immediate attention is
required. This enables nurses to monitor
multiple patients simultaneously, leading to

5. Workflow optimization and
efficiency: here routine tasks can be
automated such as documentation and
data entry, allowing nurses to focus more
on direct patient care.

6. Telehealth and remote patient: monitoring
artificial intelligence enabled telehealth
platforms facilitate remote consultations,
virtual patient monitoring and remote care
coordination . Nurses can;
 Remotely assess patients’ conditions.
 Provide guidance to patients.
 Offer support.

APPLICATIONS OF All of these improve access to healthcare services

and reducing hospital remissions.

CONCLUSION

 Several tools for the healthcare industry are now accessible on the market.
The CDSS helps to enhance the quality and safety of healthcare. The
majority of CDS apps are compatible with electronic health records. It
may , however, be utilized on its own.
 Its important to remember that the clinical decision support system isn’t
meant to take the place of a nurses’ knowledge and expertise; rather, its
meant to improve the hospital’s outcomes.
