Measuring Quantities
Quarter 2 Week 1
Measurement is the action of
measuring something. We can measure
time, weight, height, temperature,
length, volume, and more.

1. English System
2. Metric System or International
System of Units (SI)
10
The Standard System of Measures
1. English System
The evolved measurements of the
primitive or non-standard units of measure
like foot, yard, mile and inch for length,
ounce, and ton for weight and pint,
quart, and gallon for capacity.
11
The Standard System of Measures
2. Metric System or International System
of Units (SI)
The system is based on base of 10, counting
and performing mathematical operations are
easier. It uses Greek and Latin prefixes.
(examples: centimeter, kilogram, liter, etc.)
12
Choosing Appropriate Measuring Tools and Units
When doing measurements, it is important
to choose an appropriate measuring tool and suitable
unit. Using appropriate tools can make the
measurement more accurate and using suitable units
can help people understand the results more easily.
13
A. Linear Measurements
The most used instrument in measuring length is the
foot rule. Measures such as the length of a pen, width
of a book and thickness of a dictionary are usually done
with a ruler, and expressed, in centimeters.
Another commonly used linear measuring device is the
meter stick. The dimensions of a classroom can be
determined using a meter stick and expressed in terms
of meters.
14
A. Linear Measurements
For longer length and distances, surveyors
and engineers use measuring tapes
together with surveying instruments usually
on a tripod. These measures are expressed
in kilometers.
15
B. Mass Measurements
A weighing scale is a measuring instrument for
determining the weight or mass of an object.
Objects like gold ring, a cup of sugar, and a small
pack of peanuts are measured in terms of grams.
Heavier measures like weight of a man and sack of
rice are expressed in kilograms.
Very light objects such as solid medicine quantity
are measured in terms of milligrams.
16
C. Volume Measurements
The most common device used for
measuring volume of a liquid is the
graduated cylinder.
Medicine syrups and softdrink capacities are
expressed in milliliters while gasoline and
water tank are given in liters.
17
D. Temperature Measurements
The commonly used instrument is called
thermometer.
Celsius scale and Fahrenheit scale are the
units of measure.
Kelvin is the SI standard unit for
temperature.
18
E. Time Measurements
We measure time in seconds, minutes, hours, days,
weeks, months and years with clocks and calendars.
Some of the instruments used in time
measurements are the common watch, pendulum
clock, atomic clock, cesium clock, and quartz
crystal clock. These are collectively called
chronometers.
Calendar is used to measure longer periods of time.
19
EXAMPLES:
The following shows some typical examples of
measurement:
The height of a door is about 2 meters.
To measure the height of a door, a tape measure
should be used.
The weight of a school bag is about 4
kilograms.
To measure its weight, a bathroom scale should be
used.
20
EXAMPLES:
In order to design the blackboard in a
classroom, Tina needs to measure the length
and the width of the board.
a. What appropriate measuring tool will she use?
Tina can use a tape measure or meter stick to
measure the length and the width of the board.
b. What will be the best unit to express the result,
and the degree of accuracy?
She can choose meter or m to represent the result of
measurement, also correct the result to the nearest m.

Seatwork 1:
Determine the most appropriate SI unit to
use in expressing the following quantities.

2. Distance from Bacoor National High School –
Villa Maria Anne to SM Bacoor
3. Volume of acid solution in a test tube
4. Mass of an eight-wheeler truck Choose your answer here:
5. Area of a master bedroom Centimeter Kilometer
