Introduction:
• The song I have chosen for my performance piece is:
Read All About It (pt. III) – By Emeli Sandé
• It was written and released from her debut album, ’Our Version
of Events’ in 2012
• I chose this song because the lyrics strongly correlates to the
theme of growth and is full of emotion as well as expression
Theme: Growth
• Read All About It (pt. III) links to growth because it speaks about continuing to
persevere in the face off adversity, and that everyone has the ability to overcome
and speak out about any challenges that confront them.
• This is supported when she says in the first verses:
‘You've got a heart as loud as lions’
‘You've got the light to fight the shadows’
• Additionally, the chorus helps to express this idea further, as well as the idea that
you shouldn’t fear any consequences for opening up and speaking your truth:
‘I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream 'til the words dry out’
‘So put it in all of the papers
I'm not afraid
They can read all about it’
Instruments:
• Read All About It (pt. III) consists of:
Piano – plays the chords
Vocals – sings the melody over the top
• Dynamics:
At the beginning and after the first chorus, the verses are a softer tone
In the first chorus, the dynamics change to a louder tone, however they
are not harsh or rough
In the final chorus, the dynamics switch to a quieter, and softer tone which
finishes the piece
Tempo, Tonality & Structure
• Tempo:
Read All About It (pt. III) plays at 98 BPM, however it can also be used
double-time at 196 BPM
• Tonality:
The chords used are: [Bm] [G] [D] [A]
It is played in a D Major key, therefore has a major tonality
• Structure:
Verse1 , Chorus, Verse 2, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus
Practice:
• In order to make this piece effective, I am practicing by:
Singing it without the lyrics to ensure I know them off by heart
Singing it with the backing track and singer to get confident on
the tones
Singing it karaoke version until I am comfortable
Recording me singing it and relistening to see if there is
anything I can improve on, and repeating this until it meets my
standard
Reflection:
• I think my performance went well as I memorized the lyrics, and
sung it with the singer in the background, and then as as
karaoke version. Furthermore I recorded it a few times so I
could chose the one which sounded best.
• However, next time I would have improved it by practicing more
times, and ensuring to go through the process of recording
myself, listening to it, noticing any improvements that could be
made, and rerecording a better version until I couldn’t think of
any more ways to make it better.

Composition Piece
DINA SALMAN
Introduction:
• The style I have chosen for my composition piece is:
Minimalism
• I chose this genre because the instrumentation gradually builds
as the music progresses, representing the theme of growth
Theme: Growth
• My composition links to growth because it begins with very few
instruments playing, along with limited notes. However, as the piece
continues, every 4 or 8 beats, more notes are added, as well as
more instruments to transform it from an initially thin texture to a final
thick texture.
• For example, this picture of one of the tracks in my composition,
shows that the number of notes per beat increases whenever the
track is split, so it continuously grows.
Theme: Growth
• Furthermore, in the piece, you can see how the instruments
gradually layer up producing a growth effect instrumentally. This is a
common feature of minimalist music.
Instruments:
My composition consists of:
Tuba – plays the ground bass
Realistic Marimba – plays the motif, and the number of keys per beat increases
gradually
Violins 1 – plays the original motif with the technique of augmentation applied to
it
Violins 2 – plays the original motif with the technique of augmentation applied to
it
Vox Box Synth – plays the drone, and the number of keys per beat increases
gradually
Latin kit 1 – plays the beat, and the number of keys per beat increases gradually
Latin kit 2 – plays the pulse
Process:
• First, I wrote a ground bass using notes from my chosen scale which was A harmonic minor, starting on
the tonic and ending on the dominant.
• Next, I set my tempo around 65bpm, and sequenced the ground bass into Logic, using a Tuba, and
quantized the notes to ¼.
• After that, I added a new track using a Realistic Marimba and used notes from the scale I picked to draw
in 8 notes using the pencil – 1 on each of the lines – and then deleted 3 of them in random places, which
produced a motif layer.
• Then, I used note addition by looping my motif, copying and pasting then adding a note using the pencil
tool multiple times.
• Once I had finished with the motif, I used augmentation by copying and pasting my original motif on a
new track, using Violins making the notes twice as long. I then did this again on a new track but instead
made the notes three times as long.
• Subsequently, I created a drone by adding a new track, and using the Vox Box Synth to play a long note,
and I added an additional note every 4 beats.
• After, I used the Latin Kit to create a beat and I made a new track every 8 beats with the same instrument
adding in 1 more note
• Finally, I used the Latin Kit to add in the pulse which was 4 notes per beat.
Reflection:
• I think my composition went well as I used a variety of
minimalist techniques to support the theme of growth and used
layering to grow my piece instrumentally.
