THERE ARE TWO APPROACHES TO
THE NATURE OF BEING:
METAPHYSICAL EXISTENTIAL
• deals with the broader range of
• uncomplicated, as our existence begins
possibilities of our existence, or
and takes on essence
overview
• we live first, then we develop who we
• beginning to consider what being is, the
are and define our essence
various substances around us, and why
or how they exist
EXISTENTIAL

MARTIN HEIDEGGER JEAN-PAUL SARTRE

• A German philosopher best
known for his contributions to
phenomenology,
hermeneutics, and
existentialism.

• He calls human beings

Dasein, a German word that
means being there. MARTIN HEIDEGGER
THE HUMAN PERSON, IN TERMS OF OUR
EXISTENCE, HAS TWO FUNDAMENTAL
FEATURES
THE HUMAN BEING EXISTS IN THE HUMAN PERSON HAS A
A WORLD SELF THAT DEFINES HIS OWN
EXISTENCE IN SOCIETY
• very being is to be there, to be in here—
being-in-the-world • allows us to see the existential import of
• implies that our experiences revolve being-in-the-world about the question of
around where we live; we live with things, who we are
with other people, and in a particular
location and time
WHAT MAKES A HUMAN PERSON'S WORLD AND HOW A BEING
CONNECTS TO AND REGULATES THEIR LIFE IN THIS WORLD?

• To determine what makes human existence distinctive and how it relates to the world, we must
compare it with the presence of mere things and objects in some place or around us.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN, AND HOW DO YOU DO THAT?

• We look at and consider the things that are present in our lives as something that we use or something
that is a part of us.
BEING CONNECTED WITH THINGS CAN
TAKE TWO FORMS

BEING WITH THESE

BEING ALONGSIDE THINGS OR ENTITIES
BEING ALONGSIDE
• equipmental world
• things appear to the human person as
instruments or utility for their practical
purposes to satisfy their empirical needs
• theoretical contemplation, which relates to
what a human could observe or study
BEING WITH THESE THINGS OR
ENTITIES
• social/public world
• a human person has the characteristic of
considerateness of both objects and fellow
human persons, using them as equipment and
treating them with respect.
MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF A
HUMAN'S BEING-IN-THE-WORLD
• TEMPORALITY
• It indicates that temporality is a process through which
periods connect and relate to one another, like how the
current condition, or present, is linked to and relates to the
past and future.
• Human time combines the present, past, and future,
defining reality in unity- which means that for human
beings, their past and future are many parts of their present.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FACTICITY
AND EXISTENTIALITY
FACTICITY EXISTENTIALITY
• a person's past, or facticity, refers to • this refers to all the possibilities a human
everything one possesses and cannot be person has and can choose to have in the
changed future, including all the goals one can set for
• "thrown into the world"—that is to say, oneself to accomplish.
people are born in a world in which they
have no choice but to live
• In conclusion, consider how a human
being in the present is influenced by
what they didn't choose (the past) or by
what they will choose (the future). It
suggests the unity of a person's past,
present, and future events alters their
existence.
TRANSENDANCE
AND
LIMITATIONS
• A French philosopher, playwright,
novelist, screenwriter, political activist,
biographer, and literary critic,
considered a leading figure in 20th-
century French. philosophy and
Marxism
• He was a key figure in the
philosophical movement of
existentialism.
• Sartre is also known for his
combination of existentialism and
Marxism, which created a unique
JEAN-PAUL SARTRE
political philosophy.
A UNIQUE CHARACTERISTIC OF
HUMANS PERSONS IN THEIR
NATURAL CAPACITY
• TRANSCENDENCE
• It refers for humans going beyond their current situation or
limitation.
• It also refers to being in a spiritual or religious state.
• Capacity of human transcendence is rooted on the human property of
consciousness called intentionality
• An increased sense of connection to something larger than oneself
and even beyond the social groups to which one belongs
• Satre talks of how consciousness is a propensity of how
humans should make their own decisions, whether right or
wrong, then analyze the result of that decision.
• Intentionality is a fundamental and inherent property of
consciousness because it is more basic than the Reflexivity of
consciousness.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN

INTENTIONALITY REFLEXIVITY
INTENTIONALITY
• Being conscious of something (ex. person,
animal, object, etc.)
• It also when a subject’s mental state is directed
or is conscious about a something other than
itself.
REFLEXIVITY
• self-reflection or reflecting upon oneself.
• Allows an individual to understand themselves through
their action and thoughts and be able to control their
behavior and reasoning.
• To understand and be conscious of external and internal
inputs:
- External Inputs like appearance, actions, and behavior,
etc.
- Internal Inputs like thoughts, memories, emotions,
knowledge, and strengths, etc.
• Intentionality is a part of a person’s being, whether we like it or not, our beliefs will always be
about certain things since our beliefs will be the influence for our actions. Contrasting this with
language’s intentionality, which is merely customary or something that we all agree on. It is up to us
to decide whether words refer to specific things or not. The intentionality of consciousness also
differs from the intentionality that we occasionally metaphorically attribute to things. For example,
like when we sometimes say that our television set is already tired and thus desires to take a rest. In
this regard, philosophers like John Searle had distinguished 3 distinctions between intentionality:

Inherent intentionality- intentionality of consciousness

Derived intentionality- which is the intentionality of language, maps, and signs.

Metaphorical intentionality- intentionality that we sometimes attribute to machines.

BUT WHY IS CONSCIOUSNESS PRIMARILY AND
INHERENTLY DIRECTED AT THINGS OUTSIDE ITSELF?

• Due to another crucial aspect of consciousness

being incomplete, lacking, deficient and nothing
• Consciousness seeks to fill in gaps within itself by constantly seeking external things.
This transcendence occurs when the things it primarily directs towards are beyond
itself, and consciousness is always transcending itself. An example is, desiring a skill,
is a process of transcending oneself.
• It is free to choose what to believe, think, desire, or hope, and is always in the process
of defining its essence.
• Consciousness's intentionality is tied to its freedom and lack of a fixed essence. It is
free to choose what to believe, think, desire, or hope, and is always in the process of
defining its essence.
• Sartre had distinguished between consciousness as being-for-itself and being-in-itself.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN

BEING-FOR-ITSELF BEING-IN-ITSELF
• the way consciousness exists, characterized • lacks the capacity to adapt and is unaware of
by its own activity and purposeful nature. its own limitations.
THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

• The factors pertaining to natural environment include

natural laws or forces such as gravity, and natural events.

WHAT ARE THE FACTORS THAT
POSSIBLY LIMIT ONE’S
TRANSCENDENCE?
• Natural environment
• The body
• Other people
THE BODY
• The factors pertaining body refer to the various characteristic of the body such
as, genetic make-up, physical attributes such as height, weight, complexion,
nationality, gender, and etc..

OTHER PEOPLE
• The factors pertaining to other people include our concrete relations with them
and their mere perceptions of us. There factors which generally refer to the
facticity(quality or condition) of a human person.
ACCORDING TO SARTRE
“Whether something limits our transcendence or not still
depends on your choice.”

The idea is that something becomes a limit or an obstacle to our

trancsendence or freedom only because we have made certain
choice. And the ability to transcend the present situation of a
human person is part of the nature of a human person being a
conscious individual
