Chapter 11:

Looking at the
Filipino Past

redress this biased view of the Filipinos.

Morga’s Sucesos
 While at the British Museum in late 1889, Rizal found a
copy of the first edition of Marga’s Sucesos and began the
text by hand. He annotated the work along the way with the
intention of creating work on the history of the Philippines.

 On September 1889, Rizal published the annotations in

Gernier Hermanos, a printing press in Paris.
Five Reasons for Rizal’s choice to
1.Annotate
Morga’s work was rarethe Sucesos
2. Morga provided a secular view of the historical
events
3. Rizal believe that a secular view was more credible
than that of the religious.
4. It was more sympathetic than the friars account.
5. Morga’s work was an eyewitness to the events
during the early period of Spanish colonization.
The Publication of his
annotations to Sucesos
Rizal presented an outline of a linear conception of
history.

Noli Me Tangere dealt with the nineteenth century

El Filibusterismo and the essay titled “The

Philippines a Century Hence” covered the future,
the annotations off Sucesos tackled the past.
