2nd Quarter: LESSON 1

ROTATION
AL
MOTION
Presentation by; Mr. Brian V. Nazareno
Most Essential Learning
Competencies;
 Relate the momentum, impulse, force, and time of
contact in a system

 Solve problems involving impulse, and momentum in

contexts such as, but not limited to, rocket motion,
vehicle collisions, and ping -pong.
Recall
Let’s have a recall with all the lessons,
we’ve discussed last quarter. Let’s
create a bubble of ideas.
“You can’t go back and change the
beginning, but you can start where
you are and change the ending”

MOMENTUM

ANY
IDEA?
MOMENTUM

● Momentum is a commonly used term in sports.

MOMENTUM

● It refers to the quantity of motion that an

object has.

● A sports team that is on the move has the

momentum. If an object is in motion (on the
move) then it has momentum.
MOMENTUM

● Momentum can be defined as "mass in motion."

● All objects have mass; so if an object is moving, then
it has momentum - it has its mass in motion.
MOMENTUM

● The amount of momentum that an object has is

dependent upon two variables:

1. how much object is moving (mass) and

2. how fast the object is moving (velocity).
MOMENTUM

● Momentum depends upon the variables mass and

velocity.
● In terms of an equation, the momentum of an object
is equal to the mass of the object times the velocity
of the object.

Momentum = mass • velocity

MOMENTUM OF A
SYSTEM OF
PARTICLES

● To find the total momentum of a system of particles, we take the sum of the
momenta of all the individual pieces of the system.

● The total momentum of a collection such pieces is then;

total =i=ii
Momentum of Two Cars Solution
We can find the momentum by each car
Two cars are on course for a collision using Eq. 6.1 and then add the results to
in one dimension. The small get the total momentum.
car has mass of 1 200 kg and a speed
We must include the sign of the velocity
of 20 m/s, and the large car has a (= or - ) of each car when calculating their
mass of 2 000 kg and a speed of 15 momenta.
m/s in the opposite direction. What is
the total momentum of the two cars?
Momentum of Two Cars
To calculate the total momentum, we
can treat each car as a point particle.
We Then have (Eq. 6.2) The total momentum of our system of two cars is
= i = i i = m11 + m22 thus;
total

total = m1 v1 + m2 v2
where m1 and m2 are the masses of the cars total = (1 200 kg) (20 m/s) + (2 000 kg) (-15 m/s)
and 1 and 2 are the cars velocities. In this
example, the motion is one dimensional, so = - 6 000 kg • m/s
we can work in terms of the components of
and . From Fig. 6.2, we have 1 = +20 m/s for
the smaller car and 2 = -15 m/s for the larger
car. Here, the signs do matter.
