    Major Assignment 1

    Intro

    Factors such as, our background, family, friends, religion, beliefs, the books that we read,
    movies, and the TV shows that we watch are the reason why everyone takes in information in
    different ways, think and speak in different ways, interact with other people in different ways,
    and write in diverse ways. As shown in Brandt’s analysis of “Sponsors of literacy” and
    Rumsey’s idea of “Heritage of literacy”, we as writers have many influences that shape our
    identity as a writer. Many things have influenced my identity as a writer. The 2 main things
    that have influenced my identity as a writer was my family background and my teachers. For
    Heritage of Literacy, I will explain that my family's first language isn't English and how that
    has affected my writing and reading comprehension skills. For Sponsors of Literacy, I will
    explain how my English teachers in high school have helped me a lot with my essay writing
    and my reading comprehension.
    Heritage literacy

    Growing up in a diverse family, my family spoke mostly French growing up and

    didn’t learn English until they moved to the US from Mali. This was a disadvantage

    for me since my parent’s first language was not English. It made me struggle

    initially and I had to go through speech therapy and English so I can be caught up

    with the other kids my age. I wanted to improve my reading comprehension and

    writing skills so I do not have to go through that struggle again. Heritage literacy

    affected me both in a positive and negative way. It was negative because of the

    initial struggle that I had to go through but was also positive because the struggle

    helped me improve a lot with my reading comprehension and writing skills and

    made me better as a person.


    My sponsors
    A sponsor is a figure who are most typically in people's memories of literacy learning.

    Examples of sponsors would include:

    ● Teachers

    ● Priests

    ● Supervisiors

    ● Officers

    ● Editors

    ● Authors

    In my case, my sponsors were my English teachers throughout high school because of the

    impact they had on my reading comprehension and writing skills. They gave me great tips

    which not only improved my grade in the class but also improved my reading comprehension

    and writing.
    Conclusion

    In conclusion, we as individuals had many challenges but we also had support that helped us overcome those challenges. When I used

    to struggle a lot with my reading comprehension and writing skills because of my family background, I hated writing so much and that it

    was boring and a waste of time. After getting the help I needed and pushing through, I started to like writing and became good at it

    thanks to my English teachers Overall, I am grateful for the experiences that I went through because of what I have accomplished

    because of it. I used to hate reading and writing because it was so hard but now I am starting to enjoy it.
