CRITICAL READING

Critical reading is a more ACTIVE way of
reading. It is a deeper and more complex
engagement with a text.

-it is a process of analyzing, interpreting


and sometimes evaluating. When we read
critically, we use our critical thinking skills
to QUESTION both the text and our own
reading of it.
There are five
critical reading
skills...
FIVE CRITICAL READING SKILLS

1. Assessing or judging the worth of


what you are reading

• a process where you evaluate


the information presented in a text.

2. Distinguishing facts and opinion

• is a critical skill in information analysis.


A fact is a statement that can be proven
true or false, typically through empirical
evidence or data.

3. Stating the communicative function of a


text by identifying the writer's intentions or
attitudes

• involves understanding the purpose


behind the text and the author's
perspective.

4. Evaluating evidences used to support an


opinion

• involves critically examining the data, facts, or


information presented to justify a viewpoint. This
process helps determine the strength and validity
of the argument made.

5. Reacting to a text by giving opinions


about the text you're reading or about text's
writer
• involves providing personal feedback or
thoughts on the content or the author. This is
often a subjective process and can be
influenced by your own experiences, beliefs,
and values.
