What is Consciousness
Consciousness is fundamental attribute of all matter – Shri Aurobindo.
Consciousness as an attribute that may be explicitly unfolded as seen in the life forms that
are conscious or maybe in the form of implicate order that remains unexpressed. – David
Bohm.
Consciousness is a novelty seeking modality of experiencing that turns on gene expression
and brain plasticity. – Ernest Rossi
To be aware is to be conscious.
According to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra there are 7 stages of consciousness the first 3 of which
are: Awake, Sleep and Dream where the feeling of “I am” persists.
The 4th stage is called the Turiya state. In Mandukya Upnaishad the 4th stage is described as:
that which has no parts, soundless, the incomprehensible, beyond all senses, the cessation
of all phenomena, all blissful and non dual AUM, etc.
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness. It is different from ordinary awareness. Here,
one is a participant and a witness too. Finally, the observer and the observed both merge
Hypnosis as an altered state of consciousness
Hypnosis has been studied extensively in the scientific world and the phenomenon of
hypnosis is well documented.
No one can be hypnotized against their will.
Hypnosis transforms ordinary consciousness to an altered state of consciousness, like dream
and sleep.
Hypnosis is natural and ordinary. It is not delusional.
Hypnosis is goal-oriented
One experiences a natural hypnotic trance state when one is engrossed in hobbies like
reading, painting or engaging in creative imaginative visualization and even when one is in
love. These experiences are ethereal and “other worldly”.
Hypnosis can turn these glimpses of these experiences from the past to the present – here
and now. It is a doorway to this altered state of consciousness.
What is Phenomenon in hypnosis?
Hypnosis, Yoga Nidra and Dhyana originate in the 4th state of consciousness or Turiya
Characteristics of this state:
Mind becomes quiet, calm and peaceful
A general sense of well being prevails.
A state of alert restfulness.
A state of focalization at the center (subject) with lesser peripheral awareness. This focal
point become symbolic which goes on expanding its abstract meaning.
There may be distractions but no disturbance.
There is choiceless extensive awareness but it is not inclusive of anything in particular.
Metaphors appear to be real.
Subjective time distortion – time may move fast or flow- utilized in hypnotherapy. Time
dilation and constriction as well as stoppage of time are natural outcome.
There is also shift of Location or space
There are various psychological and physiological benefits as well.

utility in school studies
Past life regression
Revivification
Catharsis
Age Progression: Memories of the future
Post hypnotic suggestion

Automatic actions – useful in removal of tics and helpful in sports hypnosis
Physiological phenomena in Hypnotic state
Physiological Phenomenon in Hypnosis
Changes in voluntary muscular system and eye movements, Catalepsy and arm
levitation, Increase of muscular power, Paralysis, Muscular features independent of
suggestion,
Changes in involuntary muscles and vasomotor systems:
Pulse – frequency of pulse can be altered during suggestion, Respiration – slowness can be
induced, Bleeding – can arrest bleeding, Local redness of skin and blistering, Changes in body
temperature, Menstruation, Action on bowels, Micturition (urination), Lachrymal secretion
(eyes), Perspiration, Milk secretion and others like fall in metabolic rates, peripheral flow of
blood increases, Plasma cortisol level declines and increased functions in both hemisphere of
the brain
Ideosensory changes – Visual, touch and pain perception; analgesia and anesthesia
Hearing, Alterations in Olfactory sensation, anesthesia, Childbirth, Cutaneous sensibility,
