EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON MINERAL

ADMIXTURES(RECRON) AND FIBER REINFORCED


CONCRETE

INTRODUCTION

 The amount of cement production emits approximately


equal amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

 Cement production is consuming significant amount of


natural resources.

 Cement content in concrete can be reduced by using


pozzolanas.

 GGBFS,Rice Husk, Silica Fume are some of pozzolanas


used as cement replacement materials in this research.
 The present investigation on analyzing the effects of use of fibers and
mineral admixtures in the mechanical properties of high strength
concrete. This study involves the use of different mineral admixtures
like Rice Husk, ground granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume along
with steel fibers. It also includes determination of mix proportioning
with different mineral admixtures and steel fibers, determination of
water binder ratio, determination of basic properties of concrete such
as tensile strength, compressive strength, flexural strength and water
permeability.

 One of the main tasks of the construction industry is to increase the


strength and reliability of structures while reducing construction costs

 Effective use of fiber reinforced concrete is likely to lead to reduction


in reinforcement. In the previous studies, very less research is carried
out on use of fibers with a combination of two or more admixtures.
Hence, it is felt that there is a need to explore the feasibility of arriving
at an optimum mix using a combination of fibers with two or more
mineral admixtures, so as to increase the properties at minimum cost.
Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag

Ground-granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS or GGBFS) is


Obtained by quenching molten iron slag (a by-product of iron
and steel making) from a blast furnace in water or steam, to
produce a glassy, granular product that is then dried and ground
into a fine powder.
Micro Silica
Micro silica or silica fume is a by-product from the reduction of high purity
quartz with coal in electric arc furnaces in the manufacture of silicon and
ferrosilicon alloys. The fume, which has a high content of amorphous SiO 2 and
is consisted of very fine spherical particles, is collected from the gases escaping
from the furnaces. Micro silica is also collected as a by-product in the
production of other silicon alloys such as ferrochrome, ferromanganese and
ferrovanadium.
RICE HUSK

Rice husk ash is obtained by burning rice husk in a controlled manner without
causing environmental pollution. When it is properly brunt it has high SiO 2 content
and can be used as a concrete admixture. Rice husk ash exhibits high pozzolanic
characteristics and contributes to high strength and high impermeability of concrete.
Rice husk ash essential consists of amorphous or non crystalline silica with about 85-
90% cellular particle, 5% carbon and 2% K 2O. The specific surface of RHA is
between 40000-100000 m2/kg.
RECRON FIBER

Recron Fiberfill is India's only hollow Fiber specially designed for filling
and insulation purpose. Made with technology from DuPont, USA, Recron
Fiberfill adheres to world-class quality standards to provide maximum
comfort, durability, and ease-of-use in a wide variety of applications like
sleep products, garments and furniture. Reliance Industry Limited (RIL) has
launched Recron 3s fibers with the objective of improving the quality of
plaster and concrete.
EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAMMES
RICE HUSK AND RECRON FIBE
In this project work it was used Recron fiber. It is a type of synthetic fiber.
In different weight fraction (0.0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%) to cement concrete it was
used.

In this project Rice Husk in different weight fraction (10%, 20%, 30%, to
cement concrete it was used

RESULT
 1) Compressive strength of concrete increases after Replacement of Cement by
Rice Husk Ash and Addition of Steel Fiber in it.

 2) Compressive strength increases as increase in Rice Husk Ash content up to


15% replacement; further increase in Rice Husk Ash content shows decrease in
compressive strength of concrete.
 3) For M30 grade concrete, optimum mix is B2 and C2 with
15% replacement of Rice Husk Ash and Addition of Steel
Fibre.
 4) For M30 grade concrete there was 23.31% maximum
increase of replacement of Rice Husk Ash and Addition of
FCSF compressive strength as compared with standard A M30
mix and 19.30% maximum increase of replacement of Rice
Husk Ash and Addition of HESF compressive strength as
compared with standard A M30 mix.
 5) Use of Rice Husk Ash and Addition of Steel Fibre increases
strength. Thickness of rigid rural road pavement decreases
with increase in compressive strength of concrete by
Replacement of Cement by Rice Husk Ash and Addition of
Steel Fibre.
SILICA FUME AND RECRON FIBER

In this project work it was used Recron fiber. It is a type of synthetic fiber.
In different weight fraction (0.0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%) to cement concrete it
was used.

In this project Silica Fume used different weight fraction (10%, 20%, 30%, to
cement concrete.

RESULTS

1.In case of Portland slag cement it was observed that using Recron
fiber from 0.0% to 0.1% the compressive strength is not increased, but as
the fiber percentage was increased from 0.1% to 0.2% the compressive
strength was increased and on further increment of fiber content the
strength reduces.
2. At 20% silica fume replacement to cement at 0.2% fiber content
strength again increases about 12% more than that of normal concrete
and maximum to other percentage of replacement.
3. Flexural strength using Recron fiber from 0.0% to 0.1% is reducing.
as the fiber percentage increases from 0.1%-0.2% the flexural strength is
increasing about 5% and as further increasing the fiber content the
strength decreases.
3. It was observed that the 28 days flexural strength decreases as the of
silica fume percentage increases. The strength decreases about 40% at
30% silica fume replacement than normal concrete.
GGBS AND RECRON FIBER

In this project work it was used Recron fiber. It is a type of synthetic


fiber. In different weight fraction (0.0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%) to cement
concrete it was used.

In this project GGBS used different weight fraction (10%, 15%,


30%,50) to cement concrete.

RESULT

1. The test results proved that the compressive strength of concrete


mixtures containing GGBS increases as the amount of GGBS
increase. After an optimum point, at around 50% of the total
binder content, the addition of GGBS does not improve the
compressive strength. This can be explained by the presence of
unreacted GGBS, acting as a filler material in the paste.
2. It is observed here that the consistency percentage is increasing as the
percentage of GGBS increases as a cement replacement, but the
change is not so abrupt.
3. It was observed that 3 days and 7 days compressive strength reduces
about 13% and 35%.
4. Finally when the GGBS percentage increased to 40% the strength
reduces by about 60% and 70% in 3 days and 7 days respectively of
its initial values.
5. Finally it was concluded that with the increase in GGBS content
consistency of cement increases and compressive strength decrease.
6. GGBS with Recron Fiber increases the Tensile strength of concrete
up to 20% replacement, and further increase of GGBS content
decrease the tensile strength.
