The Philippines under the rule of Friars
during the 19th Century
 During the 19th century, the Philippines was a colony of Spain.
 Spanish colonial government relied heavily on the Catholic Church –
particularly the friars.
 This was to help maintain control and influence over the local
population.
 Spanish friars were the crucial elements in the Westernization of the
Philippines and ins spreading the Christian Faith
Frailocracia

 Used to describe the power of the friars (Spanish Catholic) during the
19th century.
 Is a combination of the terms “fraile” and “cracia”
 fraile – friar
 kratia – power or rule
 Indicating the rule and control exorcised by the friars.

1. Religious Control
 Friars were instrumental in spreading and enforcing Catholicism.
 Built churches and established parishes throughout the archipelago.
 Converted the native population to Christianity and exerting
significant influence over the religious beliefs and practices of the
people.

2. Education
 They were responsible for establishing and running many schools and
educational institutions.
 The schools were often religious in nature. Education was closely tied
to the propagation of Catholicism.

3. Economic Control
 They also played a role in managing land holdings, known as
haciendas which were used for agriculture and other economic
activities.
 They collected rents from the local population which added to their
economic power.

4. Political Influence
 Friars held positions in local government and were involved in
decision-making processes.
 Supervises the election of gobernadorcillo and cabeza.
 They were responsible for maintaining public morals and reporting
incidences of sedition to the authorities.

5. Social Control
 Friars had a strong influence on social customs and norms; this
includes marriage and family life.
 They played a role in regulating community behavior and morality.
The 1872 Cavite Mutiny
Cavite Mutiny

 Happened in January 20, 1872


 Was led by Filipino nationalist reformist and was partly inspired by
grievances against rule of the oppressive friars.
 Filipino natives attacked Fort San Felipe in Cavite.
 Angered by the policy of Governor general Izquierdo’s removal of
some of their privileges.
Cavite Mutiny

 Izquierdo saw this mutiny as a full-blown rebellion.


 Arrested even those who were peacefully expressing their sentiments.
 Used Cavite Mutiny as an excuse to execute three priest namely;
Fathers Mariano Gomes, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora.
 This movement contributed to the eventual push for independence
from Spanish colonial rule.
