Frank

Ghery
Made by: Sophie G11F
INTRODUCTION
Frank Owen Goldberg is an American-based Swiss architect, winner of the Pritzker Prize and
recognized for the innovative and unusual forms of the buildings he has designed.

Gehry has designed a number of iconic buildings including the Bilbao Guggenheim, the Walt Disney
Concert Hall, and the Biomuseo in Panama City and these have become world-renowned
attractions in their own right, often bringing tourists and money into an area.
In the same building, he incorporates several simple
geometric shapes, which create a visual current
between them. Its designs are not easy for
anyone to assess, since a good part of the design
quality is found in the interplay of volumes and
in the materials used in the facades.
DESCRIPTION
Inspiration:
Gehry keeps his Jewish ancestry in mind, always glued to the
ground, to reality, and says: "The inspiration is in that trash can.
Look in there; think about the caverns, the spaces, the textures
that contain that trash can.“

Much of his reflection is there. Writers and

painters throw their mistakes into a basket. Gehry
- pulls out his, crumples up pieces of paper and
transforms them into towers and palaces for
music.
Gehry believes that architecture is Art and Gehry's buildings often make use of
that, once finished, a building should be unusual, everyday materials and he was
considered a work of art. Despite this, it one of the first modern architects to
keeps its feet on the ground with experiment in this way. As such he has
functional designs that blend into the been called "the apostle of chain-link
environment. fencing and corrugated metal siding“.

This has inspired other architects to employ novel

building materials in a similar fashion, notably,
Philip Johnson.

Techniques and Style

His style is considered deconstructivism, a
movement in postmodern architecture where
elements of the design appear to be fragmented.
His architecture is typically characterized by
flowing lines, and surfaces that vary from
titanium cladding to metal Blobitecture modular
parts.
Guggenheim
Museum Bilbao
Located on the edge of the Nervión River in
Bilbao, Spain. Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
represents a magnificent example of the most
groundbreaking 20th-century architecture.
The building is a magnificent example of the
most avant-garde architecture of the 20th century
and represents an architectural milestone for its
innovative design both on the exterior and in the
interior spaces, forming a seductive backdrop for
the exhibition of contemporary art.
SITUATION
● The Guggenheim Museum is implanted in
an elongated plot, in a curve of the estuary,
which belonged to an old abandoned
factory, with 32,500 m2 of which 24,000
m2 are built, in the city of Bilbao, Spain.
Inside, 11,000 m2 are used for exhibition
spaces. The museum is located 16 meters
below the level of the city, at the level of
the Nervión estuary. The La Salve Bridge,
one of the main entrances to the city,
crosses the building on one of its sides,
connecting with the urban center.
Unevenness
● Due to the 16 meter unevenness
between the level of the estuary and
the expansion of the city in this area,
the building's more than 50 meter
height does not exceed the buildings
of the city and integrates with the
environment despite the contrast of its
wavy shapes and bright colors with
the pure and matte volumes of a more
static architecture around it.
STRUCTURE
● Due to their mathematical complexity, the sinuous curves were detected by a
Catia three-dimensional design computer program, which resolved to design
and calculate shapes that, years before, would not have been possible.
● The building is built with load-bearing walls and roofs, which have an
internal structure of metal bars that form grids with triangulations that are
assembled to form a single body.
● Catia will determine the number of bars needed in each location, as well as
their arrangement and orientation.
● In addition to this structure, the walls and ceilings have several insulating
layers and an external titanium coating.
● Each piece has a unique and exclusive shape for the place it occupies,
determined by Catia.
MATERIALS

● Built in limestone, titanium and glass.

33,000 pieces of titanium half a millimeter
thick were used, each with a unique shape
according to the place it occupies. As these
pieces are so thin, they adapt perfectly to
the necessary curves. The glass has a
special treatment to let in sunlight but not
heat and prevent natural light from
damaging the exposed pieces.
Importance of Frank
Ghery
● Frank ghery is an importnat designer and artis because with sculptural swoops and
sweeps and unusual materials, Frank Gehry changed the course of architecture.
● Gehry likes his prototypes to make the client nervous, so he can understand how they
think and use this as an input for subsequent refinements. If we can make people
uncomfortable with an idea, there's a huge amount to learn from exploring what form
that discomfort takes and why.
